Potter turtled on the Potomac
Just an FYI - third party report so it could be full of BS. I sail out of the Washington Sailing Marina just south of National airport. My race crew told me that our local WWP 15 turned turtle in the river on Saturday. A gusty day but not over 22 kts, there is a gravel bar along side the deep water channel where the big power boats plow along at speed. I have talked with the skipper on numerous occasions before the incident and he seemed to be a conservative sailor - reefed early most days. The report is that a combination gust and big wake flipped it over on it's side with the hatches open. The boat then filled with water and turned turtle. the single handed skipper finally got it righted by himself after spending 30 - 40 minute in the 60 deg water. The entire cabin was full of water and he could not pump it out or bail faster than it came back in. A local rescue/fire boat came out with a big pump and drained the boat. The owner then sailed back. My speculation is that the firs wake stopped all forward motion and the gust caught him broadside. Well - don't take waves 90 deg to the bow, 45 deg will keep the boat speed up. Thanks Doug Kelch __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
