Re: M_Boats: fire extinguisher, tiller cleats, mildew, slipcovers, hubs
Hi Tod..
I've heard of people taking a complete hub assembly with them for a spare, so when I was in the local Tractor Supply I browsed the trailer parts but didn't see anything quite like my hubs (which use lug BOLTS rather than studs/nuts).<<
I've been considering replacing the hubs on Stargazer's trailer with the studs/nuts type instead of the bolt type that's presently rust welded in place. I've bent several wrenches trying to get them off, but since Stargazer's in the water for the last 2 years, it's a low priority.....but soon!! How much were the hubs at the trailer supply ?? I can't remember which type West Marine carries, but they come in a nice kit and boxed in a thick plastic carry case. I may have to try heating the studs to remove them...if they were nuts, it would be a snap to crack them. Harvey/ Ga M-17 Stargazer #294 PS...I'm interested in your galley setup
Harvey, Have you tried a penetrating oil called "Tri-Flo" on those rusted on bolts? Our locksmith uses it for most everything. I use it for loosening old rusted on bolts - such as 50+ year old Jeep & truck. After breaking some bolts with 'Brand X' I used the Tri-Flo and after a short wait, things worked, no more broken bolts. I used it last week on a 41 GMC that has been sitting for 20 years, worked wonders. I don't recall the exact price, but they weren't much at all. For some reason I'm thinking $20 or $30, but I could be wrong.

I think it's a safe bet that WM's were more expensive. TSC's had no fancy case.

My lug bolts were exceedingly tough too....I broke a wrench on mine. After finally getting them off (the chemicals do help) I cleaned them up by soaking them and wire-brushing them and running them in and out a bunch of times (with the help of a carefully applied pneumatic wrench). Then when I re-installed them I used never seize. Must remember to check the torque a few times to make sure they aren't backing out.... I'll save your message about the galley shelf....probably will be a little while before I get to it. Tod
If you can get the bolts out in one piece then using Neversieze afterwards worked for me fine on my M@#. Dick Harvey Wilson wrote:

Try Northern Hydraulics for trailer hubs and parts. They have a fairly exhaustive inventory.
