I recently installed CMI FF2 furler and new genoa on my M-17 and plan to have protective sleeve made locally. The new sail has an anti UV strip attached. I would appreciate advice on type of material and methods of securing it (velcro, etc) and other personal observations re. utility from those with experience. Thanks in advance, Bill K M-17 #55 Half Monty
Hello all, I was curious to know how many Monty sailors are using furlers. I wanted to know what models are in use and if you are using them with tuffluff type headstays or if they are being used with zipper luffs Thanks Mark Escovedo M17 F/D #103 Chunky Dory ----- Original Message ----- From: Woodsybill@aol.com<mailto:Woodsybill@aol.com> To: montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com<mailto:montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Friday, May 21, 2004 12:32 PM Subject: M_Boats: Advice on furler sleeve. Bill I think the UV cover you already have on the sail is sufficient. Fair winds Bob Woodsybill@aol.com wrote:

Bill, I have a sleeve on the CDI furler on my M17. It's made of Sunbrella. I has webbed nylon tabs at one end, so that the sleeve can be raised to the mast-head using the jib halyard (which no longer raises the jib, since I've joined the leisure set). My sleeve has two zippers on each end, with a 4" or so gap between them through which the jib-sheets are passed. So, if you can picture this, one really long zipper runs from the masthead, nearly the length of the sleeve. Another shorter zipper completely closes the sleeve around the base of the furler. The gap is _____ above the deck, the height at which the tack is located once the jib is furled. The zipper is a very large heavy plastic YKK job. The sailmaker designed the sleeve so that it zipped "up" as it was raised. This didn't make sense to me, I thought it would be easiest to secure the zipper at the mast-head end, and zip it "down" as it was raised. I sewed tabs on the deck end, and tried raising the sleeve opposite the way it was designed. I was right. Zipping "down" is much easier. I now have a short length of zipper at the mast-head, a gap, then a loooooong zipper that runs from the gap down to the deck. The jib sheets have room to exit the bottom of the sleeve, and the gap (now toward the top of the furler) doesn't gape, so I was satisfied with the result and didn't take the sleeve back to the sailmaker to have the zipper repositioned. However, you definitely want your sailmaker to know that the sleeve should zip DOWN . . . Bruce Bingham recommends a sleeve for the furler so that it can't unravel in high winds. I had an alternative reason for wanting a sleeve instead of a UV-resistant strip . . . An alternative reason I won't bother to explain. I might be able to measure my sleeve tomorrow and give you the specs. If I can't get to it tomorrow, I'll try to get to it soon. My sleeve works very well, it's easy to remove and install, and it's rugged.
