Re: M_Boats: M-17 aux. motor
Hi Gordon, You very neatly show that the motor has to match the conditions! A 2 HP Honda won't hack it against a strong ebb tide, and maybe a 6 HP won't either............! That's where low powered vessels learn to "sail with the tide". Connie
Hi Connie, Thank You. I 'prefer' to sail with the tide, it's just that sometimes the tide's not coming back in until the wee ours (find your anchorage in the dark) and your guests, from another country, would like to get to their rooms before midnight. No motor at all is ideal for me (no noise). I also have a 1940 Snipe (15.5 ft racing sailor) that has 'never' seen an auxiliary. Just my 02 cents, Gordon ----- Original Message ----- From: <chbenneck@juno.com> To: <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Monday, May 03, 2004 2:53 PM Subject: Re: M_Boats: M-17 aux. motor

I just recently added an hour/rpm meter to my OB. I'll have to perform some tests (rpm vs speed) with it and report back to the list. While I'm at it, I can perform the same test with the other prop (different pitch) and see how much of a difference that really makes. I think on my Maine trip I used a quart or two of fuel for the whole two weeks and probably a 1/2 hp motor would've been almost sufficient. Since I'm planning on replacing the Tartan's inboard with an outboard, I made up a temporary outboard bracket to hang over the transom. I'll test the Honda out on it too to get a feel for how close it is to what I'll end up with. I'm guessing probably the 8 hp for it. Tod
Do you use the Honda 4-stroke 5-horse, Tod? --Craig ----- Original Message ----- From: <htmills@bright.net> To: "'For and about Montgomery Sailboats'" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Monday, May 03, 2004 7:52 PM Subject: M-17 aux. motor I just recently added an hour/rpm meter to my OB.
