I also have an old 2-stroke 4hp Johnson. I think it runs pretty good, except for when I forget to open the vent on the gas tank. I do hate the noise that it makes, but once in the middle of the river, it just gets shut off. Since the day I got it, I was unhappy with it. It keeps running rough despite having had it completely tuned up (new coils, new points, new impeller, new carburetor kit). Sometimes it will slowly die. And on top of everything it is rather noisy and seems to smoke a lot. I know all 2-cycles are somewhat like this, but on my previous boat I had a 50's vintage Johnson 3hp (all metal), which ran like a top with none of these problems. I would need some advice on a replacement. In particular, someone around here is selling a low-hours, 2001 Nissan 2- cycle long shaft 5hp, for $450. Does anyone have any experience with this motor? Is it supposed to be a good one/reliable/reasonably environmentally friendly? I don't motor a lot (just in and out of the dock), but seeing the oil slick and the smoke of my existing motor drives me nuts. I know that I should be getting a 4-stroke, but these are too expensive for what I need them to do. Thanks, Andrei. _______________________________________________ http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/montgomery_boats Remember, there is no privacy on the Internet!
