Hi Sandra, My best time (18 minutes) is timed from the clock inside the truck. So my time is measured from the time I first get out of the truck to the time I get back in, ready to launch. That includes all the things you listed in addition to actually rigging the boat. I find the boom difficult to get in the cabin too, but if you lift the bow end as high as you can and keep the aft end low it will just make it through the companionway and then off to one side. This method works for me. Just reverse this procedure to get it out. Rick Langer M15 #337 "Bluebird" Hudson River

Hi all, I was interested in the times posted re: setting up your M15. I haven't really timed myself . When does the timing start? From the moment you park in the lot at the launch ramp? Because at that point you are disconnecting the trailer lights, removing all tie downs from boat to trailer. Setting motor on the motor mount and stowing all the gear that needs to be moved to the boat from the vehicle. Or do you start timing from the moment you board the boat and begin raising the mast, and attaching the rigging? I would think that acurate timing would mean from time you arrive at the ramp til you actually launch into the water. I never leave my main attached to the boom, with it being loose footed, it doesn't seem to save much time. I also am unable to get the boom into the cabin so I stow it on top of the mast secured with bunge's, it rides well there, rode from GA to Utah with no problems.
Thanks to Steve for the metal to metal information. All new to me but very valuable. And thanks to those who have responded regarding the set up of the jiffy reefing. I have all the parts on order and will be making that install very soon. West Marine has an anti seizing product, but it is not the one you guys recommended. Where do you get the Permatec product?
Time for a cool change! Sandra(Seawitch #617)

The only thing more ludicrous than this question is the guy who actually replied 18 minutes was his best time to date. If you're concerned about when to start the stopwatch YOU MIGHT NEED A NEW HOBBY! You're going SAILING for gosh sakes...on a really good day you can make the boat travel at the same speed as WALKING. Is there some kind of race to see who can get on the water first to start relaxing?
Oh, I don't know, Stephen... Launch time seems to be governed more by technique and practices than actual round-the-trailer velocity, and it usually seems for me that whenever I'm setting up/taking down there isn't any shade to be had and the sun is beating down relentlessly and the heat is rising from the asphalt and I feel as though I'm about to melt into a pile of goo right there in the cockpit. I'd LOVE to cut my rigging time down. One way I've done that is by leaving the Busca's mast up on the trailer for most of the season, so I only rig a few times a year. The only drawback to that is that each time I do rig, the next step doesn't come automatically. And every now and then I find I've gotten some task out of order. Which, by the way, is how I come to hold the world record for M17 mast takedown time. *grin*. On my vacation trips, I unload almost everything of any weight and place it in the bed of my pickup truck, making the rear wheels heavier and the trailer lighter and giving me lots more work!
