M15 Jib, Main and Tiller Lock
Thank you, Tom S, Steve R, Bill R, Randy G. I think that on my boat I will start with the tiller lock because I have been there with a 20 MPH wind blowing and trying to set the sails with the tiller loose! The rudder will go the wrong way! I am thinking that a Tiller Lock from WM would be the best to start with. Does anyone have any more advice? Thanks in advance, Peter D Peanut M15
Peter, I think Tom's bungee system may be the best, in some respects. Like Connie, I use the Forespar extension with tiller lock box. There are advantages to the extension and lock box, but there is also value in having some stretch in the system. The M15 is very sensitive to weight distribution. In light to moderate, steady conditions, I can lock the tiller, stand in the companionway and lean to port or starboard to make small course adjustments. Keep that in mind because whatever you use to hold the rudder, short of an autopilot or wind vane, you will need to keep an eye on where she's headed and be ready to respond. Peter, Don't buy the tiller tamer from W.M. The best tiller lock is available from the company below. It works great, is indestructible, and when I accidentally lost the lever that engages the lock they rushed a new one to me at no charge! http://www.cansail.com/ Mark Dvorscak M17 Grace M23 Faith -----Original Message----- From: montgomery_boats-bounces+edarts93=earthlink.net@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:montgomery_boats-bounces+edarts93=earthlink.net@mailman.xmission .com] On Behalf Of Peter Deffenbacher Sent: Tuesday, February 03, 2004 11:25 PM To: montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com Subject: M_Boats: M15 Jib, Main and Tiller Lock Thank you, Tom S, Steve R, Bill R, Randy G. dittoes on the Davis Tiller Tamer rejection......there was one on Busca but it has long since hit the road....poor execution of a concept. Nowadays, when not position to self-steer on Busca I just hook up an elastic cord to both sides of the tiller, components which already exist for use because of the sheet-to-tiller self-steering. Gentlemen: I have a tiller tamer and like it. I end up going clear up on the forward deck to clear a fouled line (or even re-attach a loose forestay!) while the tamer keeps the boat on course. I wouldn't single-hand either boat without something similar. (Sometimes need to go make coffee or use the head too.) --Gary Hyde M15 #235 'Vanilla' N24 'Sailabration' On Tuesday, February 3, 2004, at 11:25 PM, Peter Deffenbacher wrote:
