Montgomery 15 or 17 in the New England
Hi, I have been sailing a Com-Pac 16 for 5 years, and have become disappointed with its performance (especially upwind). The Montgomery 15 or 17 seems like it may be a better choice. Before I decide to purchase one, I would like to know if there is anyone in the New England/New York area that has one that I could take a look at. Thanks Charlie
Hi Charlie, You won't be disappointed, I sailed a Ranger 23 for a number of years, then decided to get a trailer sailor. We found an older Compac 16 that needed work, fixed it up over the winter and then sailed it the next summer. Even with new sails we just were not thrilled with its performance so we sold it. This past fall we bought a Monty 17 and the difference is like night and day when comparing it to the Compac. I had one of the older Compacs that did not have a center board or bowsprit, both of which I think would have made a difference in performance. Hi Charlie, We have a brand new resource at our disposal. Sean Mulligan has set up an owners registry at YaHoo groups. You'll need to become a member of the group (set up password and user name). The list is yet new but may have a listing in your area. Go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Montyowners/ Other sources of information: www.MSOG.org www.MSOGPhotoSite.com Have fun, Bill On 6/4/08, Chad Parrish <cparrish@fafnirnet.net> wrote:

Hi Charles, I too had a ComPac 16, and after sailing it for two years was so disappointed with it's sailing characteristics, and lack of proper storage that I went looking for a replacement... The size was right, ..... but..... In "MESSING ABOUT IN BOATS" I saw an ad from a man who said, "Selling his M15 was the biggest mistake he had ever made in his life." I called him and he kindly sent me a brochure of the M15. (he found and bought another M15) He also introduced me to the M-website and owners all over the country answered my questions. I finally bought one, sight-unseen, in Panama City Florida (I live in Glastonbury, CT), drove down and brought my new toy home. The M15 has everything that the ComPac lacks. It is a "proper" ship. It has a nice double berth - with no mast support post in the middle It has excellent cockpit sail lockers for stowage of everything you need on a boat. No pushing "stuff" under the cockpit seats into black holes, only to have to pull it all out and stow it in the cockpit (where it gets wet when it rains) if you want to use the berths (?).... It has excellent interior stowage spaces. It is a wonderful sailing vessel and goes to windward almost exactly where you point the bow (not at a 45 degree angle to the intended course as the ComPac sailed) The M15 is a wonderful, excellently built little ship and I enjoyed every minute I spent on it. Get one, and learn what true happiness is all about. Hi Charlie, been there and done exactly that. Went compac 16 to M-15 and now M-17. I am very pleased with the sailing qualities of the M boats. My compac16 could not point to save her life or in my case to get under the Chesapeake Bay bridge against the tide. Wish you luck in your search. I am farther south in VA.
