Ok folks this is the first time I've tryed to respond let me know if I'm doing it wrong . Thanks for the info Jerry ( man it's cool to have the buider to ask and talk to ) . The cracks are about 1/4 inch deep I put a bit of sandpaper down to see . It's on the list of to do things I still can see no reason for the cracks other than it was to thick , where it is . Once again thanks for answering and making such a great boat KLaas Message: 4 Date: Mon, 17 Oct 2011 09:09:51 -0700 From: "Klaas" <santaklaas@telus.net> To: "Montgomery boats groups" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Subject: M_Boats: Cracks in locker Message-ID: <760BD948E4324A1DB6081B942032FBEF@mypc> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Hi I just bought my first monty 15 a 1985 hull # 321 and after cleaning out all the old stuff in the port seat locker I found cracks . The gelcoat is much more brittle than the glass, and if the crack only goes thru the gelcoat I wouldn't worry about umnless I was really picky. If the actual bond is broken, I'd try to figure out why. Could it have bounced crooked on the trailer? Is there a way that water could have gotten to the wood and swelled it, breaking the bond? If you need to fix it, use several layers of glass cloth, not mat, and epoxy resin, which will stick to old glass much better than polyester.
A 1/4" crack is DEEP. Could it be that the gelcoat that was used to paint out the interior of the boat pooled in that area to a depth of 1/4"? Get some light and dig around and you should be able to tell if it;s gel coat or glass. There shouldn't be any filler material there; we simply prewet the plywood and bonded one side, and when that cured we bonded the other side. Bonds should be a bit wetter than a laminate but definately not wet enought to be swimming in resin, which becomes brittle and dead weight. I don't suppose you're anywhere near Sacramento? jerry ----- Original Message ----- From: "Klaas" <santaklaas@telus.net> To: "Montgomery boats groups" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 18, 2011 5:53 PM Subject: M_Boats: Re Cracks in locker
