Hello: I am working on my rigging. I notice that the shrouds fit into a vertical grove in the tip of the spreader. How is the spreader attached to the shroud so that the shroud would not pop out of, and off of, the spreader if the shroud were to go slack, or when lowering the mast? Jay
Jay, I believe the newer M17s solved this problem (if it is one) by capturing the shroud under a cap at the spreader end. You might be able to retrofit such a cap. I would say a combination of spreader boot (when the rig is down) and tension on the rigging as well as the boot (when it's up) covers the bases.
From my memory of my '74 M17, the groove in the spreader end is well pronounced. t

Tom: Thanks for the info. This one does not have a cap - the prior owner had wrapped it with a lot of rigging tape - so now that I know there is no "magic" device, I can make it work - appreciate the help! -----Original Message----- From: montgomery_boats-bounces+jaytownley=alamedanet.net@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:montgomery_boats-bounces+jaytownley=alamedanet.net@mailman.xmission. com] On Behalf Of Tom Smith Sent: Friday, January 19, 2007 4:08 PM To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats Subject: Re: M_Boats: M-17 attachment of shroud to spreader tip Jay, I believe the newer M17s solved this problem (if it is one) by capturing the shroud under a cap at the spreader end. Jay: My upper shrouds are attached with stainless steel wire threaded thru that little hole next to the groove you mentioned. Initially the wire was too small and broke, so I now use stainless wire that is about the diameter of baling wire, if that is meaningful. --Gary Hyde Pullman, WA gmhyde1@mac.com M17 sailboat #637 'Hydeaway 2' We can't change the wind, but we can trim our sails. Sounds like a good plan! Thanks for the info I'm trying to get it ready for next w/e when the QE2 will be in SF Bay! We'll see what happens!
