The trouble is that the part I need is only half of a turnbuckle; I suspect that if I buy a regular turnbuckle it will be too long for what I need, even with all the adjustments at the shortest setting. Does anyone happen to know what this "half-turnbuckle" is called? If I knew, I could try to find someone who sells something like this. Thanks, Andrei.
Andrei, I think what you are looking for is a "turnbckle body" as it appears that the "Screw" is intact. Your turnbuckle looks like the Ronstan model I had on one of my past boats and I found the Jaw end body at a Marine supply in Dallas. If you don't have a local sailboat chandlrey nearby, you might try online sources like Defender marine, or West Marine. Ron M17 #14 Griselda

Dear Ron, I checked the Ronstan web site, as well as the West Marine one, and Ronstan seems to only manufacture closed body turnbuckles. Here in Madison Wi we seem to only have West for chandlery, so I'd have to order online anyway. If you happen to see somewhere listed an item like what I need, I'd appreciate it. Thanks, Andrei.
Andrei, Look for 'jaw body only turnbuckle'. One side has the jaw to connect to the chainplate and the other accepts the shroud. The trick is going to be to find one small enough for 1/8" wire.
