Re: M_Boats: Running Lights M-15
Skip, On My 17 the tri-color masthead light has the red, green and white but I don't believe the white is an anchor light, I think it serves as the stern light. Also I think the tri-color is only acceptable under power. The operative word here is "think" cause I'm not 100 percent on this. I'm sure one of our M brothers will know for sure. Gary, I agree with you. I mention the anchor light only because I've seen numerous boat anchored at night with the clear/while light on all night.? I have an anchor light mounted on my stern, but it's so bright at night that I turn if off when I go to bed.? I'm thinking about mounting a light?somewhere up front to use as an?anchor light, so?it won't interfere with my 'Zzzzzzzzzz' at night.?? Let's just hope the CG isn't out doing spot checks at 2am!! We had a couple of guys "KILLED" at Lake Livingston, TX that were anchored out for the night, when along came a bassboat skimming along and ran over them......"No anchor light"...............hmmmmmm ----- Original Message ----- From: wcampion@aol.com To: montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com Sent: Wednesday, October 17, 2007 4:02 PM Subject: Re: M_Boats: Running Lights M-15 Gary, I agree with you. Guys, A tri-color mast head light is not an anchor light. The tricolor has all three colors usually lit by one bulb. An anchor light is an all white all round light. You can't make a tri-color show all white, at least not one that I know of. Somebody let me know if I'm wrong. Also IIRC the tri-color masthead light needs a steaming lite. a white lite on the front of the mast, usually about 2/3 of the way up, to be used when under power. BUT, on a 15 foot boat I don't believe any of this is actually *required*. At sea though, or in busy areas, it's probably a good idea. Rik wcampion@aol.com wrote:

On the subject of spreader lights and steaming lights. Spreader lights absolutely ruin you night vision and since most of my night sailing is in coastal waters I would never ever use them. I do have a clip on flashlight with a red lens which I use at night. Since the steaming light is not required for our size boats I would eliminate that for the same reason. If you do mount a steaming light make sure it does not shine on deck and reflect back to the helmsman. Preserve that night vision. Never use the steaming light with sails up for the same reason - it is illegal and ruins night vision. The mast head tricolor can only be used when you're under sail. You have to have a separate set of navigation lights if you are operating under power at night and the masthead tricolor cannot be used in conjunction with other navigation lights. The white light is indeed the stern light when the tricolor is in use. An anchor light must be an all around light. Please learn which lights are to be used for different situations before the need arises. They can save your life!
