Bert, I'm looking to get the same outboard. I heard both long shaft and short shaft comments here. How is the short shaft working? I also have the original fixed mount. What is everyboady else using as a motor? Thanks, Moti "the wake"#254
I just purchased and installed a 2007 2hp Honda short shaft on my M 15. I found that I can not kick it up out of the water because the housing hits the
stern. I have the original fixed mount. I know many of you have the same
motor. What have you figured out?
Thank you in advance, Bert Felton M 15 Bella

Bert and Moti, I have a 2hp long shaft Honda, plus the fixed mount. With my old Johnson, a 1.5 inch rise gave enough clearance for it to lift clear of the water and not bang the cowling. With the Honda, I am going to build about a 4 inch riser. Just some good solid stock for the filler, sandwiched between two pieces of quality ply. A piece of filler at the top, then slide it down over the mount, then a filler at the bottom. Screws and epoxy should hold it together. I use a tether in the event of a failure in either workmanship or materials. If you need, I can send a photo offline of the original that came with Sojornen when I purchased her 16 years ago. For what it's worth. I bought my 1983 17 with a 4hp long shaft Yamaha. It had the stock fixed mount. It was not working well for me. My other sailboat had an adjustable and I loved the versatility. I installed another one on the 17. The motor can be adjusted easily for different conditions. I have it at the lowest position for bow work when solo or when the waves are big. When I am cruising under power in calm conditions the motor is up a bit more and works better. For getting the motor out of the water it is excellent. I also have the motor trimmed just right so I am powering parallel to the water line. Installing an adjustable is a pain in the arse but was well worth it for me. Cheers All.
