Ahoy Skippers This weekend we rounded the W. end of Catalina (on my cousins Catalina 310) at midnight a sailed into Catalina harbor. My old GPS gave me fixes which I plotted onto a chart to see our track and make sure we were not going aground. There was no visibility and I found myself hallucinating in the night and spending way too much time plotting our track. I decided if we make it through this and I could get back to the form I would ask you skippers if you are using GPS systems with plotting capabilities? What are the hot systems? I finally switched to a chart-plotting GPS in preparation for a kayak trip along the Georgia coast, where there are lots of back channels, creeks and rivers to navigate when it's too rough outside. I bought the Garmin GPS 478, a relatively small, waterproof unit with a generous screen, and I love it. In addition to having preloaded charts of all coastal and Great Lakes waters, it also has road maps and works in your car. I use a Garmin GPS 76CS. It is a handheld unit, has a color screen, floats, includes a pretty good basemap and is compatible with bluecharts maps. I like it because it floats (I can take it kayaking) is able to run on its own batteries which is nice for hiking and using it off the boat. I have a cradle wired up that will allow it to run off of the boat battery as well. I have used it for 2 years now and really like it. It is now available as a refurbished unit from edge GPS for $175. http://www.edgegps.com/eCart/viewItem.html? idProduct=261 At that price it is a great bargain. It is interesting that several of us have taken to kayaking as an alternative water mode.?My wife and I?are currently researching and preparing to order a pair of kayaks to carry in our RV for summer trips. Anyone with a strong opinion and interest to provide guidance, please contact me off line so I can gain from your experience. Jim: If you can use a hard wired unit, the Garmin GPSMAP 420 and 520, (4" and 5" screens), plotters have the capability of using the BlueChart g2 Vision SD card which will give you "auto guidance" and 3D map view features. They also support DSC communication with a capable VHF radio. Jim: Oh, almost forgot, a couple of links that may help https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=148&pID=8053 for specs on the Garmin products and http://gpsonsale.com/index.html for an on-line store that offers substantial discounts from list on the plotters. Sailnet has an even better price on the Garmin 540s right now, including depth sounder transducer. --gary On Mar 3, 2008, at 9:19 AM, William Larson wrote:
