Thanks Rich: Do you by chance know the West Marime part number? 'cause I can't seem to find it on line anyway. Sounds like something I may want to try... -- Steve McClellan~~M15~#152~~Chicago
I went to West Marine, purchased a J24 Tiller and used it on Really and was satisfied with the 4-foot length.
Steve:J24 Tiller information is in the '03 catalog, page 919, model # 274241, HLMAR# 1251F. listed at $ 69.99. FYI, When I milled the J24 tiller to fit I only milled the last 8 - 10 inchs to fit between the rudder plates. I repaired the old tiller and could easily swap back and forth if the elastic return for kick up rudder could be made as a quick disconnect. Any Ideas? Doug: I use the largest diameter bungi cord material possible to fit through the metal ruddder plate . I use whipping line at the end to make the diameter as small as possible to fit. It can take awhile but it's well worth it. The rudder goes up and down on command and with no slack. I replace it every so often, as needed. I too, would like to know an easier way. Doug, I just had to replace my elastic bungee cord on my rudder. Had a dickens of a time getting it through the hole in the tiller. If you wanted to easily swap tillers, consider having the bungee pass over the tiller instead of through it. You would probably want to cut a groove for it to slip into but then you could slip one tiller out and another in without a lot of fuss. The hinge pin could be routed out to the back so that the tillers could slid in and out. Carol II is back at the marina so I can't check it out right now but I suspect that would work well. Stan
