Greetings, folks: I am a new member to this list as of this morning, and I must say I'm a little surprised at how active it is (I suppose, I really should read the archives!). In any event, it looks as if I'll learn plenty in here. I am currently living in the Lansing, Michigan area, but I consider Marquette to be home (You know, Michiganian by birth; Yooper, by the grace of God!). I'm probably not alone here is not actually owning a Montgomery. I have a 13 foot wooden yawl, which is currently being refinished (pictures can be seen on the Wooden Boat forum under Swifty 13, if you'd like a peek at her). It's a fun boat, but definitly an inland lake boat. She's hull #001 by the way, and was hand built by Fred Shell himself as the prototype for his line of boats. The picture of the Swifty 13, on his website, www.shellboats.com is my boat, which he kept for his own day sailer for several years after her build in 1992. I joined this list because I'm going to need something a little bigger to satisfy my urge to cruise the Great Lakes, and it didn't take long to decide that the M17, is not only a great boat, but it appears to meet (exceed) all of my needs. It's not going to happen this year, but with luck, I'd like to have one for next season. So, I'm up to my elbows refinishing a boat that I love, and dreaming about the next one... I've got it bad!
We'll have to work a deal to send me same pasties! I'm a former Ishpeming kid, long ago. ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Thomason" <thomasond2@michigan.gov> To: <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Friday, July 09, 2004 11:09 AM Subject: M_Boats: New Memeber

Just returned from da U.P., Keith/David . . . Unfortunately, I am a troll, but I know where the sailin's good . . . I tried to launch in Munising after a circle tour of Lake Superior (entered the enchanted land of Canada through St. Sault Marie, drove through Lake Superior Provincial to Lake Nipigon, a phenomenal HUGE remote wilderness lake up above Thunder Bay . . . Proceeded around through Minnesota, Wisconsin, into the U.P. East and back to the Lower Peninsula), but conditions were too rough, with an Easterly storm moving through . . . Live in Lansing and Sail Muskegon Lake/Lake Michigan (in West Michigan) . . . I know of no other Montys in Michigan save mine . . . And, yes, I did have the requisite pastie at Cunningham's in Mackinaw City . . . And whitefish in foil at Abner's in American Sault is about as good as it gets . . . Did the Les Chenaux's in 2001, and hope to do the North Channel soon (Tod Mills can share a thing or two about that Great Lakes paradise) . . . Would like to read more about others' Great Lakes experiences here on the list, because I honestly believe we're blessed to sail in some of the most spectacular cruising grounds in the world. Did the Apostles rendezvous happen and I missed the glowing after-posts, or is it still pending? --Craig Honshell, M17 hull #389, Charlotte, MI resident, West Michigan sailor, Great Lakes fanatic and Flicka 20' co-owner . . . p.s., Probably live within 20 min. of you, David, so I'd love to see that wood Swifty . . . ----- Original Message ----- From: "Keith Diehl" <kdiehl@xmission.com> To: "For and about Montgomery Sailboats" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Friday, July 09, 2004 2:22 PM Subject: New Memeber We'll have to work a deal to send me same pasties!
