In a puff she would start thinking about jumping up on plane. None of my replacements, including a new main and 110% jib by Kern have ever done as well. Would love to have a brand new exact replica of old Reggie's work. (Rumor has it he was a bit of a character). I was told the old sails should be tossed or used as a drop cloth, but I kept them out of the hope some curious sailmaker could duplicate the voodoo lurking within. My 1981 M15 also came with McKibbin sails with the green sail bags. 30 years later they are still in very good condition. Although I consider them very well made sails, I have not used my boat that much over the years so that is more likely why they have held up so well. I have a main, working jib (100%) , and a jenny (150%) that sheets outside the shrouds. It is my understanding that McKibbin is long gone from the sail making industry. They were in Newport Beach/Costa Mesa, CA area. outside of the shrouds. this requires you to put a block on the toe-rail. sheeting outside the shrouds reduces the M15's ability to point into the wind.
when i had a 15 i was tempted to get, but never did get, a 'cruising spinnaker' to use in reaching and downwind situations ... light winds being very common in puget sound during the summer 'sailing' months.

my M15 ('84) and M17 ('83) both had/have the original McKibbens. yes the green bags are great :-) i replaced the main on my 15, but the sail was obviously well made and had done well over it's many years. my M17's sails (main, 110 jib and 150 genoa) are made to the same quality (SWEET PEA and SCRED were built about 8 months apart). the main on SWEET PEA is stretched and needs replacement. the genoa is on the 'short list' for replacement. the jib is like new as one doesn't have much use for small headsails in seattle (light winds are the norm from june through september). i've raised the 110% jib once in four years. when SWEET PEA's main is replaced i'll use the old sail to make duffel bags. :: Dave Scobie :: former M15 owner - www.freewebs.com/m15-named-scred :: M17 #375 - SWEET PEA - www.m17-375.webs.com :: Sage Marine - www.sagemarine.com --- On Sun, 8/28/11, jslubliner@aol.com <jslubliner@aol.com> wrote:

My 1978 boat also came with Reggie Armstrong sails. Main and working jib. Those 0 plus year old blown out sails often had her doing 5.7 knots going to weather. n a puff she would start thinking about jumping up on plane. A few of us have had to send our old M15 sails to the maker to get an accurate cut. If time will permit, I would recommend you doing the same. Sometimes it saves some back and forth. As Dave mentioned, over the years, changes happen and it's difficult to tell if your sails are stock, or even what stock was for your boat.
