Hello M-sters, Has anyone out there with a fully-loaded (electrical system, etc.) late-model M17 tried to push it with a 2 hp outboard? I know a 5 or 6 is better for long trips with no wind, but a 2 is so much lighter and easier to store that I am hoping it might be enough for maneuvering around marinas, etc., or even making a few miles in a pinch. I would do a test myself, but snow is approaching the garage eaves, and my 17 wishes to remain safely inside until the snow stops falling. Thanks, Tom Jenkins M17 Scintilla, June Lake, CA
Tom: When I first got my M17 I put the Honda 2 hp from my M15 on it and seemed to get close to hull speed with it (~ 5 knots) at full throttle in calm water. You might want to consider the Yamaha 2.5 hp 4-stroke as another possibility. I bought a Yamaha 4 hp 4-stroke for my M17 to deal with the currents in the San Juan Islands and the Snake River, but a smaller motor would be desirable much of the time. --Gary Hyde 2005 M17 sailboat #637 'Hydeaway 2' We can't change the wind, but we can trim our sails. Thanks, Gary. I have a 2 hp Mariner that I will try out, but not in Puget Sound! A Honda 2 would be my choice to use on the M17. It's probably true that the 2 isn't beefy enough for very rough conditions and strong tides, but where I sail, I believe it would be perfect for the reasons you mention. Now if I could just find a nice used one... tom On Feb 4, 2008 4:36 PM, Tom Jenkins <tjenk@gte.net> wrote:

I put a Honda 2 hp long-shaft on my M-17 when I got it last summer, and it does a great job both for maneuvering around the marina and for transits in calm water at near to hull speed.? I also haven't used it rough water or heavy wind (and hope not to have to).? It's huge advantage is that it only weights 27 lb.? Any higher hp engine I found ups the weight to the 50 - 60 lb range.? It also has neutral where it will idle with the screw disengaged, and rotates through 360 deg for backing up.? It sips gas - a gallon will last for hours. This would be my reason for wanting the Honda on our M17. We had an early model (no FNR) on our M15 and I really liked it. Where I sail, I'd take my chances with the small motor and reap the benefits of light-quiet-dependable that this motor gives you. tom
