"I believe I've heard Jerry Montgomery say it is designed to collect bilgewater, and keep it from sloshing around in the rest of the boat. He's also said it's a great place to put extra anchor chain, which in turn serves as extra ballast. " Yup, that's right. Jerry is very proud of his little bilge. If I recall correctly, he says it's one of the smartest design features he's added to the boats... Tom Smith & Jane VanWinkle M15/345--Chukar M17/064--Unamed
It also serves as a good place to stash a bottle of wine or two, especially if the water is cool. (At least it does on a 17). Beer in a can (Guinness) tends to develop pinholes very quickly if there is any salt in the water, I found. Bottles work fine, but most people like their beer well chilled, not likely to happen unless cruising arctic waters. *grin* I think Doug's thinking of weight towards the bow is good as it helps keep the transom from dragging, always an issue on these small boats. I've followed his course with jugs rather than a permanent tank: always fresh, always tasty. Yes, the Maine trip is coming up quickly, isn't it? If anyone thinks they might like to cruise these magnificent sailing grounds, more info can be seen here: http://www.todspages.net/ME05a-Maine2005.html If you want to be added to the mailing list, drop me a note. It's pretty quiet for now with everyone busy sailing but there will likely be a flurry of activity as the time draws close. Tod M17 #408 BuscaBrisas
