Hi everyone, I have been stumped trying to find the answer to this question. It seems simple enough. I must not be looking in the right places. Maybe one of you old salts out there knows. What kind of adhesive should be used on sail material? The sail numbers are peeling off my mainsail. It's an old sail, should be replaced, but I want to get one more summer out of it while I try out other sail setups and decide how I want a new one built. Any suggestions? Thanks, Larry
Larry, There is a fabric cement used in Poly-fiber aircraft covering called POLY-TAK CEMENT. It is available from: Aircraft Spruce and Specialty Co. 225 Airport Circle Corona, Californ 92880-2527 877-477-7823 (toll free) Poly-Tak Cement pints P/N 09-05110 $10.20 qts. P/N 09-05000 $18.75 Gal. P/N 09-05100 $61.90 If you order from them, be sure to have the part number and product name handy. The company is a reliable outfit, but their order takers don't know jack about their product lines and you cannot expect them to be capable of offering any suggestions. These prices are from last years catalog, but if they are higher, it shouldn't be much. The way you would use this would be to put the sail on a hard flat surface and brush the cement onto the back of the numbers then place the numbers where you want them. Use a squeegee(sp?) to press the number down onto the sail. Do this quickly as the solvent used in this cement is very volatile. Just do one number at a time because of the short time. Then, after all the numbers are in place, go over them with an iron, especially the edges. Use a fairly cool iron using just enough heat to smooth it out. This stuff is strong. The fabric on my Cassutt Racer is glued to the tubing with Poly-Tak, and the FAA approves its use with no stitching required. A pint would probably be a lifetime supply. Use a cheap throw-away natural bristle brush. If you need to clean it off anything, use methyl-ethyl-ketone (MEK) which is available at Lowes or Home Depot. MEK will work as well as acetone, and it doesn't evaporate as quickly. If you have any questions, write me at my e-mail address.
