I don't know of an alternative to the jam cleat, but I'm sure there are variations that will work. The only v-cleat I'm familiar with is a fixture I call a clam cleat. I can't picture how one mounted on top of the tiller would engage the line, but I'm probably just short of imagination after a three day weekend. I'm pretty sold on the jam cleat on the underside of the tiller myself. It's practically foolproof. t Tom Smith and Jane Van Winkle M15--345 Chukar M17--064 Unnamed -----Original Message----- From: Rick Langer [mailto:farreach@optonline.net] Sent: Saturday, May 29, 2004 10:22 AM To: montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com Subject: M_Boats: Bungee cord tiller tammer Tom that seems like a pretty neat system. I'll try some bungees today. Has anyone tried an alternative to the jam cleat. Would a wood carved V-cleat attached to the top of the tiller work? You drop the line into the cleat and the spring of the bungee pulls it into the V. Rick, I've used the jam cleat/bungee tiller tamer system on three different boats. Got the idea from the Handbook of Trailer Sailing by Robert Burgess. I fashioned the jam cleat out of wood. It's kinda like 1/2 of a clothes pin. Attach it to the under side of the tiller with screws with the open end facing forward and forward of your bungee attachment points. The bungee hangs free until you need it, then just grab it and pop it in the jam cleat. Neat, easy, CHEAP, and works great. Lewis Baumstark WWP 15 Bristol, TN>
