Skip, Jim, I owned the same motor (Tohatsu 3.5hp 2-cycle). It was strong and reliable, but very dirty. After using it in salt water I would run it in a bucket of fresh to clean the salt out of the system. I was dismayed to see how much oil accumulated on the inner wall of the bucket after only a single minute of operation. The next time I need a motor I'm going to give the marine environment a break and get a 4-cycle. I like it for several reasons, but the biggest advantage is I am able to run the motor at 3/4 speed which maximizes the gas usage and is able to reach optimal hull speed.? A 2hp is good but if you?run into a head wind or strong currents you may need to run your 2hp at full throttle which isn't always good for long periods of time.? (IMHO). Ernie, I agree.? I have noticed the same thing with the oil.? I did not realize this at the time I bought the motor.? This is a 2005/6 model that was never used by the owner who purchased it.? He was selling it cheap so I figured for the price.....what the heck.? I only run it at 2/3 speed anyway.?? After witnessing the oil in the trash can, I feel guilty using the motor.? I can understand why Uncle Sam has required all new engines to be 4 cycle.??
