Re: M_Boats: In defense of 2 stroke behavior - Not pollution! off topic.
Folks, I have to come to defense of 2 stroke operation and behavior - I have owned many 2 stroke motors for boats and even one in a car ! ( 1964 Saab 96, see here for a cool video of a racing Saab - turn it up!) _http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3oXmSc_1kY&NR=1_ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3oXmSc_1kY&NR=1) these are 750 and 850 cc 2 cycle water cooled engines front wheel drive - They DO burn the lubricating oil, but there is NOTHING that can rev as quickly, the SAAB 2 stroke cars are legendary for their performance in on/off road rallies. Saab won at Monte Carlo 1962 and 1963 A proper running 2 stroke is very tractable and is able to idle down to very slow speed. My 1994 Evinrude 4 Yachtwin runs slowly enough you can discern the cylinders firing individually. I have a VERY good mechanic (NOT me!) Sorry for the straying from the list but 2-strokes can be well behaved. That Saab was the most fun I ever had in a car by myself! D*mn that thing went! GO I want my Saab 96 back even if it smokes on cold start-up! In a message dated 5/8/2009 9:02:36 P.M. I purchased a Yamaha 4hp 4 stroke for my M17 in 2000. I have been very pleased with it. Scanning Craig's List here in Mpls a week or so ago I saw the same motor, only a 2001, for sale for $640. FYI.
