I have a wonderful 1981 M-15 down at my sailing club that I have had for about a year. Recently, a 1982 M-17 came up for sale, $2500. She's in ok but not great shape. No major problems that I can find. Centerboard has been dropped, sanded and epoxied. Boat is dirty and has some cushions but they really don't fit. She comes with a ok trailer, new lights and bearings. Boat has electric system missing. 4 hp 2-stroke johnson. Am I a idiot for buying her? I just want to find out if it suits me better that my 15. Thanks, Ches
Chesley, Buy it! Too many sailboats is never enough, particularly if they are M-boats. Try the M-17, then if you find it suits your sailing better than the M-15, keep it and sell the M-15. But you may decide to keep the M-15, and sell the M-17. It is possible that you may choose to keep both boats. Not to be embarrassed if you own two M-boats, start a collection, get an M-10 and a M-23 too. Ches, Where are you located? If you're not interested, let me know. I'm never embarrassed to own a second...third....forth......fleet of boats. My situation has changed recently and I might be in the market for a larger boat. As Steve said.......you can always change your mind later and sell her or one of your other boats. You will fine that there are several individuals on this site that 'collect' M-boats. Thanks Skip, i'm on the Pamlico Sound of NC. I already sent the check. I looking forward to picking the collective brains of this group as I refurbish the 17. I'll let all know if I decide to sell one or the other. Ches

Go for it! I paid $2500 for my 1979 M17 earlier this year and believe I got a bargain. Mine didn't come with a motor (l'm looking for one), the keel works but has not been refurbished, and the transom needs major repair. A good scrub / perhaps some new paint inside and out / and a bit of updating and you should have another of Jerry's gems to play with. A new electrical system is no big deal, but after you install it you have the big advantage of knowing where you put everything / its condition / how to access it / and it will fulfill your specific requirements - number of lights / where / number of outlets / etc. I installed an electrical system in LEPPO using a small motorcycle battery. My 2 HP Honda OB didn't allow me to charge to battery, so it had to be small enough so that I could easily carry the battery home and charge it there. Connie Benneck ex M15 #400 LEPPO

Ches, I vote yes!! buy her. For that price, take her out, see what you think, if you like her, fix her up. If not, you can sell her easy. Tom B, M17 #258. M17's take a little more to use but give you back a LOT more. On Tue, May 20, 2014 at 12:13 PM, Chesley Sugg <csugg@mindspring.com> wrote:
