Rick, thanks for sharing the article about plastic trash in the Pacific. "(Check out: http://www.mindfully.org/Plastic/Ocean/Moore-Trashed-PacificNov03.htm)" I have been following the discussion on the group with interest -- it does my heart good to see there are others who are as incensed as I am about the random dumping of plastic. It seems there are many boaters in my home waters who pitch overboard anything and everything. We usually return home with a garbage bag (yep, plastic) with a lot of stuff we have picked up at the ramp and on the water. Kind of a mini man overboard drill while sailing. Only a small step, but you know: "Think globally, act locally" Merry Christmas! Nick C. M17 #69 --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. In the Spring I usually get back to the ramp with a large assortment of items. Now and again, plastic. A lot of beer and pop cans, water containers etc. I sail on a large lake and I will pick up any large-ish dead heads are half floating wood I see as well. A few years ago a buddy of mine shatered his angle while water skiing. (the xray was very dramatic)The surgeon told him he hit a half floating deadhead....and it does not have to be that big to cause major damage....specially at the apex speeds Ken would hit. He will not ski again and is lucky to walk almost normally. It changed his life. So I drag the ones I can lift out of the water and tow the ones that are too big. Like Nick said, lots of mini man overboard drills. I have also found two beach balls, and three huge boat bumper-fenders, a large custom made cushion with plywood base etc etc. I reckon much of it flys out of these muscle boats going past at 80mph. -----Original Message----- From: montgomery_boats-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:montgomery_boats-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Nick Chappell Sent: Wednesday, December 19, 2007 4:41 AM To: montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com Subject: M_Boats: plastic in the ocean Rick, thanks for sharing the article about plastic trash in the Pacific. You're right you guys, it's fun to do mini-man overboard drills on flotsam and jetsam. And whoa, the feeling of accomplishment when you can navigate in such a way as to just lean over and scoop that bobbing beer can up as you sail by. tom Tom & Jane M17 dharma bum

You know I don't drink the kind of beer that comes in cans, Jerry. On Dec 20, 2007 10:52 AM, jerry <jerry@jerrymontgomery.org> wrote:

The movie? News to me, but back in the 70's they made the movie "Riddle of the Sands". Curiosity got to me, so I ordered a copy off Amazon. VHS tape. No DVD's. Checked with NetFlix and "no joy". I found it loosely based on the book. I do mean loosely. More like a highlight reel of the some of the more famous lines. About like watching a poorly produced high school play. If you didn't already know the story, it would be hard to follow the plot. But...there is that scenery to enjoy. Anyway, now that I've watched the thing, I'm willing to put it on the road for anyone else who would like to see it. I propose to work it like this. Send me your name and address off channel and I will put together a Word file with names and addresses. FIFO rule....first in, first out. I'll put the list of names of the people who respond on a slip of paper with the movie. When you have finished ....ahem.....viewing.....ahem......cross your name off and send it on to the next person. When you do that, send me an email off channel, letting me know you are forwarding it to the next person on the list. That way, I'll always know where it is. Last person can send it back to me. If you have concerns about privacy and don't want your name out on any lists, Amazon still has a few used copies "For Sail".
