I have done the trip twice. Mud the first night is knee deep but you can walk in. Second night you are at the Padre Island Yacht Club so no problem. Third night is good sand. Not sure about the fourth and fifth as I have only done the first three legs. Can't get a pass from my wife for all five. :o) A Monty 17 could make the trip with no problem. You do have to be careful not to ground it too much in the mud as the swing can get stuck. But a couple of hours sailing with the board up and a good kick on the cockpit floor and she came down. I wasn't looking forward to diving under in those murky waters. :o) This is a great event with lots of interesting twist. It's hot as all get out but the nights are bearable. I would not even think about doing it without a bimini. David, Great information. Even if a Montgomery with a two foot draft may not be ideal for mudding, from what I hear the sailing makes it worth the extra effort. You are absolutely right, this is a great event and the boats are great to see. Just remember this is more of an endurance event than a pleasant sailing flotilla. Nine to eleven hours a day at the helm can be brutal. Winds are normally over 20 mph. Last year we had winds in the thirties. A number of boats were lost. This year the winds were unseasonably slow, 15-20 in the afternoons. Heat index is always over 100. Water depth is really not a problem if you stay in the inter coastal. Corpus Christi bay and Aransas bay are also deep so no problems there. People get in trouble primarily when they try to take shortcuts. David, Sounds like the boot camp of sailing. I assume late June is chosen because it is the hottest time of the year with the gnarliest winds, and maybe the most mosquitos and rattlesnakes.
