M-17 Back stay adjustments
I was wondering about how much backstay tension is to much? We sailed the other day and I could not get the leach to open. (Granted I did not check the leach cord...forgot ) So I adjusted the backstay about 5 inches with what I thought was a lot of tension but did not find that sweet spot. I am coming from a Pearson Ensign that had a boom vang but no backstay adjustment so this is a learning curve for me. I thought that the backstay should flatten the sail an open the leach when tightened, but I don't know how much movement there should be in the backstay adjustment blocks. A few inches or several inches? All so, does anyone have any info on how to install Genoa tracks on the M-17 or know someone to contact? Thanks for any help!! Briant M-17 405
Briant- I hope you're talking about the leach of the main, not,the genoa? On a masthead rig the backstay tension has no effect on the main; only the genoa. Hi Briant: Congratulations on your new M17. It sounds like you bought the boat that was mentioned recently on this board. I happen to own M17 #406 and since yours is one boat behind mine, I was wondering if you have a fiberglass board or the older board with the crank in the cabin. My boat has the fiberglass board and as far as I know it was the first one built that way. Regarding adding genoa tracks, that is exactly what I am doing on my boat this week. We are installing two 8 foot sections of one inch Schaefer T track, thru bolting them on top of the teak toerail with 1/4" by 2.5" stainless steel bolts with nylon lock nuts. The hardest part is bending the track along the toerail. A pain in the rear but it can be done (thanks Bob Eeg!). If you are doing this yourself, contact me offline and I will give you details.
