duuuuude - I went out yesterday to sail the "Tall Cactus" race - 12 miles - like some wanna be young buck - I saddled up the 'fish and took off, forecast for mid to upper teens out of the NNW -REACH CITY on the FISH - yeah baby - I was all over it ! Well - I start as scratch boat with a PH# (for Sunfish - I thought you need 'lifelines'!?!) 280 and at 11:02 the air goes to 0 - yes another great LP breeze kinda day, 25 minutes and maybe 100 yards from the start my lead has vapo-rized, - I go rhumb line 5 miles North, they heat up to fill their chutes (yeah A-sails and a 33 footer of some flavor!) I turn the 1st of five marks in 4th or 5 th place - beat the Megabyte but not the Laser. Coming out of the cove into new big minus breeze and shifts ONLY LP can match, I tack and discover the boom (set about 8 inches off the deck in anticipation of THAT breeze )is destined to catch on the back of my new fancy PFD and I go swimming - in head first of course - a spectacular recovery from a full-tilt turtle sitcheeation (any way else in the Sunfish?) and jump back in ----finally get in 1/2 ass phase with the shifts and screaming reach to mark 3 - an island rounding entailing a gybe - set up - full speed, jacket clear - and WHAM swimming again ! SUPER recovery this time and I don't even loose a place - back on a plane and round mark 4 semi uneventful a couple of OHHHYEAH reaches that BTW, are only available to those who 'fish ! 20 foot of spray off the beam with the centerboard tip only SCEEEEMIN' at an Ab like a real banshee ! I round the last mark in vacuum type ZEEERO air deep in a cove (the mark is the Floating Potti Docks !) now it decides to make up for all the missed opportunity - finish line dead upwind to the West, cubic yard waves three feet apart (Motoboat chop & wind) just below 20 and BIGAZZ gusts - like cage fighter gusts - 50 yards from the finish and the "3 capsizes rule" takes effect ! Over to the lee (overpowered big time) and it takes this fat outta shape Geezer almost thirty minutes and three rightings before he can slide the fat boy back in ! (water was nice). Two boats stood by (one took pictures from the YC !) and I called it a day - HISTORY was made - my first "DNF" - I just said F- it and took off SUPER SCREEMIN on a 2 mile plane back to the ramp! (stuffed it once - NoNOONOOONOOO whew) Too much fun was had by all - No equipment damage, driver beat to hell (his fault for no training and a bad lifestyle) one of the three "little boats" broke his tiller off at the cassette upon finishing ahead of me! - he did NOT have a nice planing reach home ! Laser Radial 1, MegaByte 2, Sunfish DNF ! (a first ever for yours truly!) That is the reason my drawings are not yet complete - I had to blow the cobwebs off the 'fish soose I could get spanked ! .........and I am stickin too it. The power boat big-breeze-aftermath-cluster-of-disorganization at the Launch Ramp was epic entertainment! You asked.... I LOVE a good Sunfish ride ! better than a Laser cuz it has that 'LazyBoy' posture when you are flying across the water. GO now back to your scheduled entertainment and my drawings.
