Hi All, A couple times now when leaving from port on the Gulf Islands side to cross Georgia Strait, I have left with a reef in the main. Both times, once I have gone through Active Pass and gotten out in the Strait I have found that the reef is unnecessary and I have then removed it. My reefing both times didn't quite look correct but it did the job. My question is, on my boom, a stainless steel 'loop' in the shape of a C is on one side of the boom and on the other side of the boom is a loop in the shape of a J. These loops appear to line up with the reef lines. Is this a standard setup on the Montgomery's and how is the reef line meant to be tied off to these (or are they for something else?) Thank you for your replies. Jason Leckie 'Kuma' 1980 Montgomery 17 Point Roberts, WA / Vancouver, BC
A picture would be worth 1000 words, if you can post one or a few showing your boom and the hardware... The loop like a C is probably an "eye strap" and that would be where one end of the clew reefing line would be fastened. Usually there's some kind of block (cheek block) on the other side and the line goes through that and forward to a cleat of some kind. cheers, John On 8/5/19 12:13 AM, Jason Leckie wrote:

Hi John, Here are a couple of pictures I have pulled out of my albums. The first picture, if you can zoom in, is of the 'C' and the second is of the 'J' hook. I have been tying a reef knot through that strap eye, which you called it and around the boom, so maybe that J shaped piece is almost like a cleat? Thanks, Jason. Jason. Your description detailing j-hooks makes me think those bits are for securing the sail to boom when it is down (involves using a mounted bungee cord). Reefing hardware is like what JohnS described. Share some pictures. Hi Dave, Hmm, it's for sail ties, I see. If you are able to give me details on reefing hardware that would be great! Thanks for clarifying that for me, one more piece to the puzzle of figuring out all the doo dads and thing a majiggers hanging off this little boat. By the way, I was in Montague Harbor on Wednesday and Friday night and I kept an eye out for your boat as I saw you were there recently from your Instagram postings. I was also in Conover Cove on Wallace Island during that wind and rain Thursday night. Conover Cove is a beautiful spot and a perfect little nook for a shallow draft boat like the Montgomery. I highly recommend it if you haven't been. Thanks again for peoples responses. Jason. On Mon, Aug 5, 2019, 10:54 AM Dave Scobie, <scoobscobie@gmail.com> wrote:

Thanks for the link Dave. Ya, Montague Harbor is really too busy for my liking but good for dumping toilets and buying ice and that sort of thing and actually is quite beautiful on the north side of the marine park. Yep, I've referenced this same article in past also, it's a good one with good illustrations and pics. Thanks for the pics of your boat and agree with Dave, that's not reefing hardware. The eye strap could be for one end of a clew reef line, but there's no matching hardware on the other side, and it's way far forward it seems even for a 2nd reef...? Or if you have mid-cockpit sheeting instead of mid-boom then it's not so far forward as I am thinking (don't know what year mainsheet location changed on the M17's). Also not long ago I posted a bunch of pics of my outhaul & clew reefing setup improvements in response to someone else's questions so if you have those msgs you can see those pics. If not I can post the main ones again. cheers, John On 8/5/19 12:25 PM, Dave Scobie wrote:

Hi John, I will look at the previous emails which you posted about outhaul and clew reefing setups (there is only one reef on my sail) and thoroughly read the article sent by Dave. Great information from all of you. Thank you, Jason On Mon, Aug 5, 2019, 3:09 PM John Schinnerer, <john@eco-living.net> wrote:
If not I can post the main ones again.
cheers, John

I was at Annette Inlet, Prevost Is. Hardly blew at all during Thursday's overnight wind. Was at Montague last night - had to go there to dump porta potty and collect water. WAY to many people with the holiday weekend. I'll at Port Browning tonight and back at Annette Inlet tomorrow (where I should see Bruce Ward and his M23).

Hi Dave,
Hmm, it's for sail ties, I see.

To eye I see no reefing hardware on the boom. The hardware present looks like the bungee cord sail tie setup I mentioned before.
If you need details on reefing hardware let me know.

Hi John,
Here are a couple of pictures I have pulled out of my albums. The first picture, if you can zoom in, is of the 'C' and the second is of the 'J' hook.
I have been tying a reef knot through that strap eye, which you called it and around the boom, so maybe that J shaped piece is almost like a cleat?
Thanks, Jason.

Your description detailing j-hooks makes me think those bits are for securing the sail to boom when it is down (involves using a mounted bungee cord).
Reefing hardware is like what JohnS described.
Share some pictures. Adjust their resolution so less than 500K in size (most phone image default sizes are like 2-4MB and the listproc will not let them through).

Those look like part of a system you sometimes see used for stowing a mainsail. A length of bungee cord is left running through the "Cs." When you want to stow the mainsail, you just pull the bungee cord over the sail and hook it on the "Js." Not something I would use with fancy sails like yours and not really needed on an M17-size mainsail in any event. -----Original Message----- From: montgomery_boats <montgomery_boats-bounces@mailman.xmission.com> On Behalf Of Jason Leckie Sent: Monday, August 5, 2019 1:50 PM To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Subject: Re: M_Boats: Reefing the Mainsail Hi John, Here are a couple of pictures I have pulled out of my albums.
