George, I also made the transition to a loose-footed main on my M 17 in 2010. It was an accident, resulting from my failure to pay attention to the details when I ordered the sail. A happy accident it has turned out to be. I have much more control over draft, which makes it easier to adapt to changes in wind velocity. I did have to re-rig the outhaul to add mechanical advantage, but that was no big deal (photos attached). George, Thanx for the photos. I have been confused about how to rig that on my M-15, so I plan to study your photos this winter in preparation for spring sailing, which will evenually arrive. NIce pic, Rich, so by leaving the foot loose you do not "crush" the bottom of the airfoil shape you are trying to put in the main by confining it to the straight boom? Tom B Mont.17, #258, 1978 On Fri, Feb 14, 2014 at 10:06 AM, Rich Makela <richmak@makelaperformance.com

Tom, The outhaul is the primary adjustment, so you want to be able to easily fine-tune it under way. Your explanation below sounds good to me. My experience with loose-footed mains consists of about 8 years in a Laser and 3 years in my M-17, all trial and error. Hi Rich, I have never sailed a loose footed main boat. I will try it with my Monty and compare it to lashing it to the boom. Should be interesting. Tom, M17 #258 On Fri, Feb 14, 2014 at 5:37 PM, Rich Makela <richmak@makelaperformance.com>wrote:
