Launching and mooring in Seattle area
Hi: I’m planning a trailer and sail in the Seattle area next month. I’ll be towing my M15 from Boise to Seattle and want to sail Lake Union and Lake Washington. Where are the best launch ramps? Also might want to camp in my camper van and boat trailer (plan to pull boat out each day) in marina parking lots. Also, best place to launch at Bellingham for day trips. Any ideas. Pete, If I remember correctly, there is a boat launch on the E. side of Lake Union and the rest of the lake is commercial. Another option would be to launch at a public site on Lake Washington, but that would probably involve motoring some of the distance to Lake Union. Pete: About camping at the launch ramp - I really doubt that is possible as most parks are only open dawn to dusk and then there is Seattle's homeless problem resulting in anyone 'RVing' is chased away. Lake union boat launch - https://www.seattle.gov/parks/find/parks/sunnyside-ave-n-boat-ramp Lots of places on Lake WA. Use Google & Google Maps. I don't have a favorite as I've not launched on Union or Washington lakes. :: Dave Scobie :: M17 #375 SWEET PEA - m17-375.com :: M6'8" #650 :: SV SWALLOW - sv-swallow.com

This may be helpful, for both launching & mooring: https://www.seattle.gov/Documents/Departments/ParksAndRecreation/Boating/Sho... ...if you just google or map 'boat launch' you will get a bunch in the area that are hand-carry only, no ramp for trailered boats. The above doc lays out the details of which is which (actual ramps are listed last, mostly). AND note that the above is for public ramps & access points. There may be ramps (or crane/hoist launches) in commercial marinas various places that may not appear on the above. Be sure to look outside Seattle city proper as over half of lake Washington shoreline is in other municipalities. For example in Renton: https://rentonwa.gov/cms/one.aspx?portalId=7922741&pageId=8714732 ...which in one listing I found indicates it has overnight parking, you'd want to verify that with Renton city offices. Also some of the eastside cities are less dense and traffic-intense than Seattle proper and may be more likely to have places where you can sleep over in your van (with less likelihood of hassles even if not technically legal...giant mall parking lots etc.). I have kayaked a lot on both Union and Washington (and the canal in between) back when I lived in Seattle years ago. You will get more swirly wind on Union since it's in a bit of a basin with ridges to E and W and lots of urban buildup all around. The Wooden Boat Center at south end of Lake Union is well worth a visit if you like old/classic boats (sail or otherwise). This time of year you will probably have most of the waters and winds to yourself, especially on weekdays. cheers, John On 12/07/2018 10:48 AM, Dave Scobie wrote:
