Happy Holidays to all the Monty Folk and their families. I have to 'chime in' here on the wood refinishing topic. Location Phoenix, AZ - (my Father-in Law lives in NY and FL, and says we live in Hell.) It is the lower lattitudes, lots of sun and hot as the dickens - so I have found any hard film i.e.. varnish -polyurethane etc., to be very short lived and lots of work. I love varnish personally, the whole 'experience', but I only use it down here on items that are NOT stored outdoors. Used to use Deks - just applied the last of my Deks Olje #1 to my oars for the dinghy, I think the consolidation of companies and those darn tree huggers may have helped to point out the stuff was toxic as anything on earth, LOL. Central Arizona solution - meaning dry air, high heat, heavy UV exposure based on past life in boat biz, - 100% Pure Tung Oil - I get it at Woodworkers Source - _www.woodworkerssource.com_ (http://www.woodworkerssource.com) Old Masters 100% Pure Tung Oil part # 90004 quart can. We use it indoors and on the boat. (Watco Teak Oil was not too long lived in our experience) This stuff lasts about 16 +- months uncovered. Remember - Wear eye, ear, nose and throat protection, if it is heavy - don't lift it; if it smells good or strange, don't sniff it; and follow all manufacturers directions - Read the MSDS's and don't dare tell your neighbor what you are using! Actual mileage may vary depending on how much "fun pedal" you experience! Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, Happy Kwanzaa! Peace and Joy to ALL! Back in the early 90's I used Deks Olje #1 and #2 and liked it but I see it's been discontinued. Forgive me if I have said it before, but the copious varnish on my NS27 has lasted 7 years with no damage in the Hawaiian sun, covered as it is with sunbrella. The cover is almost worth the cost if you value your hours.
