Companionway boards
I have to replace my companionway hatch boards. The track will accept 3/4 inch thick stock. Any suggestions for type of wood to use? Will something other than expensive teak work?Should the ends be splined to prevent warping from the sun? Tom. I'll take/find some pictures when I get back to the shop of a system we use for a 2/3 drop in board. It uses a small amount of teak with Marine teak plywood. A lot less cost than solid teak. Give me a couple of days, as I'm on the road doing Sage stuff. Will be back in Golden, CO, new years. :: Dave Scobie On Dec 29, 2015 7:17 PM, "Thomas Buzzi" <thomaspbuzzi@gmail.com> wrote:

Follow-on question - has anyone used Starboard or something similar (solid synthetics) for their companionway boards? Pajarita (my M-17) came with boards made from only half-decent ply, which have warped some (especially the topmost board) with respect to "straight" and to each other. I plan to replace them, one way or another, so, a timely question for me also. thanks, John S. On 12/29/2015 07:35 PM, Dave Scobie wrote:

John, Gilasailr@aol.com, has a set of boards made of that type of material for a 17 he is looking to sell. I made a set this past year out of some pressure treated yellow pine I had lying around. It warped badly even though I ripped it into 2" strips , reversed the graining and epoxy glued panels of the ripped stock together to cut my companionway boards out of. I had glued vertical grain splines to the ends too. Lot of work now needing to be replaced. Oh well, live and learn. FYI, while making a pattern for the boards to fit width-wise in the companionway opening I found out that the sides of the opening were not symmetrical. Surprise! Good luck with your project. John. Have a boat with starboard dropin boards in the shop. Owner in FL and no real teak on outside of boat. Dropin out of plastic bit more difficult to make as Starboard doesn't take to being glued. Will share pictures when back at the shop. :: Dave Scobie On Dec 29, 2015 9:07 PM, "John Schinnerer" <john@eco-living.net> wrote:

Hi Dave, Thanks for the quick reply. Whenever you get the chance will be fine. It looks to be a long winter down here this year. I've used Starboard for the bottom board on my M-15. The standard sized Starboard sold on-line fit with just a little trim work. I did not replace my top board because only the bottom board delaminated. Additionally, the width of the top board exceeds the width of commonly available Starboard.
