Proposal re place to collect pictures
Hi all, There's been a bunch of useful pictures posted lately. And, they're not anywhere we can look at now, except individual computers of those who saved them for themselves. I have a proposal: Enable the photos feature of the "Monty owners" yahoo group, as a place to put our collective pictures for this list, so that they remain available online in one location, can be in albums, can have links to them posted here. This would require the owner of the "Monty owners" Yahoo group to agree to turn on the photos feature. Is the owner of that yahoo group here on the list? If you are, would you be willing to enable the photos, for the purpose I describe above? Right now the Group Description says: "The sole purpose for this site is to act as an owner's registry for Montgomery sailboat owners and to act as a portal for links to already etablished Montgomery websites. It is not intended to duplicate or replace any existing web sites already dedicated to Montgomery sailboats. Please utilize the existing MSOG message board to stay in contact and post messages, and the MSOG.org board for classified ads. See the "Links" section for direction to all of these other sites and more." There is no existing web site that provides this ability, for members to add their Montgomery sailboat photos to share with other enthusiasts. Hi Folks, I am already on record in support of John's original suggestion to transition to the use a yahoo group as an archival site for photos. So at the risk of being a little redundant I would like go beyond echoing support for the idea and make my own case for it's value as a relative newcomer to the forum. I have only been a member of this group for a couple of years, that said in the time I have owned my M17 and in the 2 years prior while trying to decide what boat to buy, I have leaned heavily on the information and photos on the Montgomery.org and the msogphotosite, the later which is so graciously hosted by Sage Marine. The information on both sites was and is invaluable... The msogphotosite really shows the vision and value of what an archival home for monty material can provide, the albums & links that are provided have been and continue to be a rich source of information for all of us. So what's missing with the current msogphotosite?, why would we consider changing??? Utilizing a yahoo group would : 1) provide members with the ability to archive/share their photo/document information on their own initiative, time-line or moment of inspiration, without any technical/website master assistance. 2) it would allow for a broader group of volunteers/moderators from all corners of the community to help curate and administer the site, and in doing so make it easier to keep the site up to date. 3) adopt a modern web platform which is purpose built and technically maintained specifically to provide common features used by groups just like us. In short the vision and value of the msogphotosite is clear I think to most of us, just imagine how much more effective and rich the content could become with the attributes listed above... Then when we reference them in a post...they'll still be there next year when some new members sees something in the list archive and wants to see the pix too. Or a topic comes around again with new questions about some pix from a while back. And so on... This list is fine with me for the e-mail part of things.. One of my hats and some small portion of my livelihood is in the web development world - if I had a clone and some funds I'd set up a heckuva cool membership-based site for Monty owners, fans, etc.. Hello, John, Knowing nothing about your programmer skills I am curious as to what you mean by "funds". It is very expensive to set up the program you mentioned? Are there government regulations and requirements and licenses that have to be adhered to and procured? Enable the photos feature of the "Monty owners" yahoo group, as a place to put our collective pictures for this list, so that they remain available online in one location, can be in albums, can have links to them posted here.
This would require the owner of the "Monty owners" Yahoo group to agree to turn on the photos feature.
Is the owner of that yahoo group here on the list?
If you are, would you be willing to enable the photos, for the purpose I describe above?
Right now the Group Description says: "The sole purpose for this site is to act as an owner's registry for Montgomery sailboat owners and to act as a portal for links to already etablished Montgomery websites. It is not intended to duplicate or replace any existing web sites already dedicated to Montgomery sailboats. Please utilize the existing MSOG message board to stay in contact and post messages, and the MSOG.org board for classified ads. See the "Links" section for direction to all of these other sites and more."
There is no existing web site that provides this ability, for members to add their Montgomery sailboat photos to share with other enthusiasts. Some on this list already have yahoo logins, anyone can get one for free, and there is no requirement to use it for anything else but to log in and add or view pictures in the group.
It may come to pass that the MSOG site gets set up to provide this ability, and, that would be yet another registration for yet another site, the time-line is unknown, the functionality is unknown, the implementation is dependent on someone's free time and energy instead of yahoo's existing infrastructure.
This group already exists, for Montys, let's use it for photos for those of us who want somewhere to put them.
I rest my case...:-)
If the answer is "no" or the owner is not here or the group is abandoned (only links added since 2012 are spam) then I'll look at other options to propose. A "Monty photos" Yahoo or Flickr group probably.
