Teak and Hatch Boards
Thanks Larry and Connie for the response to my post. Connie, I was thinking that you might say to go with the oak under the heading of "It's Just a Boat". I might even be able to darken and reden the oak with stain before I oil it. Also under that heading, a fast way to upgrade those delaminated hatch boards is to turn them around so the inside is now the outside. After removing the delaminated layer I flipped the boards, lightly sanded the good side, oiled and flipped the hardware. They look great, but are really only cosmetic for the angle between the boards now allows water to enter the boat. If I'm ever worried about the water coming in I can flip the ugly side out and I'm back to where I started. Of course this is only a temporary solution, for I do plan to rebuild the hatchboards. But if I don't dislike the flipped board enough, I could end up keeping them for a long time. Rick Langer M15 #337
One of the great things about the Montgomery's is the MSOG website. There is a good article on M15 hatch boards by former M15 owner John Harris: http://www.msog.org/how-to/hatchboards.cfm All joking aside (Mostly from him), Doug does a great job with the site. Just to add to this hatchboard discussion, I made new hatchboards for my M17 out of starboard and they look great. I also added a rectangular stainless steel vent in the top board. No maintenance! I made them in three pieces with the the bottom edge of the middle and top hatchboards angled down to reflect incoming rain. If anyone is interested I can send some pics. What kind of finish can you put on starboard? Wayne ----- Original Message ----- From: "Maria Jorge" <mcjorge@bellsouth.net> To: "For and about Montgomery Sailboats" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 30, 2004 6:32 AM Subject: Re: M_Boats: Teak and Hatch Boards
