Steve, Oar leathers are to prevent wear on the looms of your oars at the oarlocks. They also make rowing a lot easier if you put a bit of neetsfoot oil on them as a lubricant (I also use tallow). Another benefit is that they fill up the space in the oarlock so that you don't have so much slop there while rowing. Wouldn't row without leathers on my oars - life is too short to do it the hard way. Connie ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Connie: Do you use buttons on your leasthers? If so, how did you attach them? My sculling oar operates at about 45 degrees or more vertical, as opposed to horizontal, so a button is needed because the tendency of the oar is to move up and down as well as side to side. Howard
Call off the Dogs, I found what I was looking for: http://www.gartsideboats.com/leather.php Now if I can just get that kid to come home and tie up another Turk's Head like the one he did for the tiller, I'm the same as done. Howard
