I am considering buying M17 #325, but the hull-deck joint is cracked all around the boat, including the transom, which shows some repair. The boat has not been used for some years and is in reasonably good shape otherwise. How serious is this cracking? Can it be dealt with by cleaning/grinding and good quality caulking? Or is it evidence of more serious structural problems? I'd appreciate any advice, privately or on the list. Karl Krahnke Ft. Collins, CO krahnke@comcast.net
Which type of hull deck joint does the boat have? Does it have the joint with metal toe rail or shoe box type? No. 278 had the metal toe rail, and the hull deck joint caulking had given out in a few places, which was a source of chronic leaks. I took the rails off, ground out the obvious bad places and fill that with thickened epoxy, sanded it back to flush and rebedded the rails with 3M 4200. No more leaks. If it's the other type, are the "cracks" in places where the boat might have been rubbing against dock pilings? As in fracture cracks? If so, that might be a bigger job....but could probably be dealt with. Howard M17, #278 On 8/12/05 7:23 PM, "krahnke@comcast.net" <krahnke@comcast.net> wrote:
