Yup, the boat is in the garage and there is snow on the hills this morning. Our M15 was a welcome escape most every weekend this strange summer, and my wife fell in love w settling in for a night on the water (it has quietly gone from being called ‘your boat’ to ‘our boat’). I’ve got fond memories of sailing in a night clear enough to see the Andromeda’s galaxy by eye with the comet Neowise hanging over the lake, and of the look of slight consternation on the faces of sailors on Catalina 22s and the like as we overtook them to windward on one of the rare days our lake filled with sailboats. I’ve got a long list of boat projects to turn to once the house and yard are buttoned up for the winter- and I did get new tires n hubs on the trailer so that it’s ready if a chance to take off in search of warmer waters opens up. So Jerry, know that 34 years after she left your shop, this little boat is giving joy to her owners and attracting the attention of strangers- whether people know boats or not, they all stop and take a good look and note what a great little boat she is. Yeah the season is waning...for those of us in temperate to cold climates anyhow. I will post some pix of my revised jib sheet setup soon, and a bit of info about the Siltcoos lake experience back in middle of summer. I am also very relieved that I still have my M17 at all. The Almeda fire that started here at the north end of Ashland, OR, a month ago now and burned thousands of homes and hundreds of businesses in Talent and Phoenix just to the north, came within a mile of turning my "Pajarita" into whatever a big hunk of fiberglass in boat shape becomes in a firestorm. cheers, John On 10/11/20 9:24 AM, Alex Conley wrote:

I’m located in upper NY and putting my M17 in storage thinking modifications and improvements I want to make for spring. I sail always single handed on East end of Lake Ontario. I bought it two years ago and it was in marina but no more marinas for me. Only reason I was in a marina this summer is from going over my bicycle handlebars and breaking a few bones. Like a shoulder and ribs. I crashed my airplane two years ago, flipped landing after losing a wheel, and only got a cut on my head so if you have a choice take the airplane crash. I did not buy the M17 to keep in a marina but to trailer to different locations. I have a Drascombe Lugger I bought at the factory in England 40 years ago and it is a perfect trailering boat but I wanted a cabin. I’ve been the owner of a number of boats and buying a New Catalina 320 ranks right up there as one of my biggest mistakes. Back to what I hope to accomplish with my M-17. Mast raising and lower by myself taken care of. I guess I should mention here I’m 80 but consider it no Handicap. I now have a reefing roller fuller I dislike. It is just to cumbersome, heavy, raising and lower mast so it is being put aside. Now thinking maybe just a roller fuller so any thoughts on that would be appreciated. Two other head sail came with boat and look new. I now use a tiller tamer on both boats but decided to go with the Simrad AP as an extra crew person for next year. Have it but not installed. A surprise for me is how low, I’m 5’8”, the cockpit seats are so I plan to order cushions. All lines I’ve run to cockpit. May install a stern rail. That’s it so if anyone has advise for me all would be appreciate. My M-17 is a 2005 and I have a new Honda 4hp on it. Main reason for it is not needing a gas tank in cockpit. I did find a gas tank in Westmarine I think will fit in stern locked. When crossing Ontario to Canada on the motor takes about 1.5 gal. Based on other boats. I really haven’t been able to sail the boat enough to give an opinion on it. My reason for buying it was sailing against one in TX on Lake Belton in 1976-77. I was sailing a Chrysler 22 and never beat it once and since then always wanted one. Charlie Sent from my iPad

I got a Raymarine tiller pilot and for me it changed everything. I wouldn't give it up for a whole basket of puppies. Also, had a stern pulpit but took it off and gave it away. The immediate reason was to fit a boat cover, but I don't miss it. It also interfered, a little, with the outboard.

I used to have a little Johnson two-stroke that was very reliable once I figured out its quirks. It had a 3-gallon tank, like the one at West Marine, in the stern locker with the fuel line coming out through an inspection port. At 100:1 mix it was pretty clean, but I couldn't take the noise.
You got a Raymarine Tiller Pilot?! Good on ya! Now you can sail your boat and not even have to step off the dock! Had one of those on my Flicka and they are easy to use, dependable, accurate and do allow the cook in the galley to make lunch while all sails are set and drawing when I go single handing. Could you give me the manufacture for fuller you are using Carlos. The roller fuller i have is a tape the sail feeds into and why it can be used for reefing. It comes close to being as heavy as the mast with sail on. It is next to impossible getting bolt in the mast if attached. I just want a simple rig and if sail has to be reduced do it with main. Of course there is always start the motor. I’m not a purest. My want is a lite weight fuller and those can not be used for reefing but great for docking or leaving. My Lugger has one and if needed to reduce jib It’s done. Of course jibs can not be changed so you have one jib size as I know. I’ve looked at a couple and they all looked good but haven’t found, as yet, any good example on YouTube for small boats. Charlie Sent from my iPad

Ronstan makes some small boat furlers (furling only, no reefing). Duckworks sells two sizes: https://www.duckworks.com/product-p/rf-76-parent.htm Harken makes similar (at the usual 2-3x cost), as do other hardware makers. cheers, John On 10/12/20 7:33 PM, Charlie via montgomery_boats wrote:

I was sailing a Chrysler 22 and never beat it once and since then always wanted one.

Just checked Duckworks and the fullers. Exactly what I want for a fuller. I’m giving them a call. Looks like what I have on my Lugger. Never a problem with it and it’s 40 years old. Charlie Sent from my iPad

Ronstan makes some small boat furlers (furling only, no reefing). Duckworks sells two sizes:

Harken makes similar (at the usual 2-3x cost), as do other hardware makers.

That’s it so if anyone has advise for me all would be appreciate. My M-17 is a 2005 and I have a new Honda 4hp on it. Main reason for it is not needing a gas tank in cockpit.
