Gerry. Start with six inches of rake and see how it goes. Adjust from there after you get some sail time. Some rake is good. And if I recall from prior threads (check the archives Gerry, quite a bit on mast rake in last year or so, including from Jerry himself), in degrees the recommendation is 1-2 degrees for M17. So you can use trig to determine what that is in inches. I got new forestay and backstay last year and set mine up and I have about 4 inches on mine I think, which IIRC is about 1.5 degrees. So six inches would be 2 degrees. Don't trust my memory - there's online trig calculators that will do the math for you, put in the mast length (the longest side of the triangle) and desired angle (e.g. 2 degrees) and it will tell you the other two side of the triangle, including the very short little side that is the distance from mast base aft to vertical line up to masthead (where the main halyard would hang on a perfectly level boat on a windless day :-). cheers, John On 5/3/19 10:42 AM, Dave Scobie wrote:

That sounds like I then also have to shim my new assembly to introduce some rake. The new Dwyer mast came with a hinged step rather than a tabernackle with one pivot bolt. Yeah, rake not bend. If there is any slop in that mast base, it might work. 2 degrees is very little movement at the mast base. BUT you don't want any constant tension on the pins or plates etc. from the rake! I have the original tabernacle and was originally planning on using it. I was surprised that Dwyer set the new mast up with this hinged base because I didn't ask for it although I see it would be nice for the stability of raising the mast. I am guessing the new mast is a bit shorter due to this thicker hinged step, so I might have to shim the tabernacle up off the deck to go that route. I'll do some measuring and see how the height is. Gerry Use your old mast tabernacle. You don’t want that mast going sideways and pulling bolts thru the deck. The DM 6 mast is too heavy for a hinged Mast plate. Here's a few pix of the tabernacle on my '74 M17 "Pajarita," #38. Is the original as far as I can tell. 3/8" SS bolt thru slot in tabernacle and thru hole in mast. Weight-bearing of mast base is on base plate of tabernacle, bolt and tabernacle side plates just keep the base in the right place. A hinged base plate (or even the beefier tabernacle such as on mine) won't keep your mast aligned while raising, if it gets out of control. Weight-bearing of mast base is on base plate of tabernacle, bolt and tabernacle side plates just keep the base in the right place. A hinged base plate (or even the beefier tabernacle such as on mine) won't keep your mast aligned while raising, if it gets out of control. I was surprised that Dwyer set the new mast up with this hinged base because I didn't ask for it although I see it would be nice for the stability of raising the mast. I see on Jerry's site that the M15 likes a little rake aft. Same on the M17 or no? And if so, how much is a little? Does one actually flex the mast doing this? The reason I ask is that the new mast from Dwyer came with a new hinged step rather than a tabernackle, so there is no pivoting on a tabernackle bolt once it's mounted with this hinged step and pinned in place.
