This dry collapsible toilet looks very practical as an alternative to a porta potti. http://www.thepett.com/ Has anyone used them? They are only $90 at REI Thanks Doug Kelch --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. Make Yahoo your homepage.
Hey Doug, I am pretty sure that is just a fancy bunch of plastic that holds a plastic bag in the correct target area. I have used a short bucket with smaller heavy plastic bags for the same thing. A plywood 'seat' makes it more comfy. I used a commercial grade (like for food related stuff) bucket....like a five gallon job, but half the hieght. This size fits well on a boat and came be used for other stuff as well. I have a nice portapotti these days, but still keep the bucket onboard for washing the boat etc. I can tell you one thing.....no matter how many layers of bags you use (I have gone up to three) a collection of those bags and thier related contents will still somehow reek a coupla days later while cruising. Get rid of them asap. The Airhead toilet is not much more complicated than a bucket with a bag liner. http://www.airheadtoilet.com/ To use the plastic bucket, line it with a garbage bag and put a quart or so of peat moss in the bottom and keep a snap on lid handy. You might want to go to the extra trouble of keeping solids and liquids separate. On Dec 14, 2007, at 9:08 AM, Tim Diebert wrote:

Tim, One of my concerns is oder and leakage. The product literature say: "The bags are biodegradable; they are made with a patented blend of polymers and natural starches to break down in landfill conditions after 6-8 months, depending on conditions. There are two bags; one funnel-shaped waste collection bag pre-loaded with Pooh Powder waste treatment used to contain the waste, and a heavy gauge zip close bag (12" x 10") to secure and transport waste." In other areas of their lit. they specfically say the pooh powder eliminates the oder. You can buy extra Pooh Powder if you want. We've used a boom box on river trips for many years. This device is good because it addressed Doug's concerned about smell and leak. The porta-potties on M-boats are a good idea, and a compelling feature, and they look good mounted in their thoughtfully designed places, but they are a real PITA to maintain. See the boom box here: www.eco-safe.net As I said, it works great on rivers, but it has to be set up and broken down for use. Not so hot for m-boating I think... The key to any alternative shitter is WAG bags. Because they are bio-degradable, they can be legally disposed of in garbage cans and dumpsters (I'm not sure about vault toilets--I'll have to research that). tom
Cat litter will do the same job as the poo powder,,,,,,works good.,,,,just dump a cup in the plastic bag before use and it absorbs a great deal of the liquid and kills the oder.... http://www.tcboats.com/blwood2.htm Bill M17 ----- Original Message ----- From: Tom Smith To: 'For and about Montgomery Sailboats' Sent: Friday, December 14, 2007 10:16 AM Subject: RE: M_Boats: dry portable toilet--boom box We've used a boom box on river trips for many years.
