Is it feasible to move an M15 around on the trailer by hand? I live in a townhouse, and need to store a boat in the garage. It needs to go in nose first, meaning rolling by hand on the jack (whatever boat I finally get will have the jack upgraded first thing.) The driveway is flat, but I’m wondering how easy it is to roll these boats on the trailer by hand, they’re small but it’s still a lot of weight for one guy! 🥵 Thanks all, Rusty Oh, and find me a nice M15 or Sage15 to buy!!! Please!!! 🙏🙏🙏😜 www.rustyknorr.weebly.com
If it’s truly flat ground , not difficult at all. I push my 17 into the garage by hand. It’s made way easier by lowering the tongue onto a 4 wheel dolly and off of the tongue jack. You can get some steel 4 wheel dollys at places like autozone. I use the safety chains to secure the tongue to the dolly once it’s sitting on it and retract the trailer’s tongue jack all the way.

A trailer valet and things like it are limited in it's ability by the tongue weight. Basically a powered tongue wheel is limited by the coefficient of friction x the weight on the wheel ((in this case tongue weight) So if you have a coefficient of friction of 0.3 and 150 lbs of tongue weight you only get 45lbs of force before it starts slipping. For a 1500 lb boat and trailerthat's only a 3% grade before it might start slipping. I find the M15 easy to move around by hand, even up a slight hill... I've never even bothered to use the trailer jack because it's only about ~50lbs of tongue weight. It depends on your fitness and strength level- I think most healthy adults could manage to move around an M15 easily but people with injuries, health problems, etc. might be better off just using a vehicle. Agree it not too hard or heavy to move by hand, but getting it into a garage is a bit more difficult if you've a permanent mast crutch on the front to deal with. Just can't get that low while keeping your back intact; thus the trailer jack goes to its lowest position once the rear is inside the garage. Then just push by the trailer frame. Tyler, You just made me feel like a ‘Geezer’! Not taking it personally- but that trailer dance is beyond my abilities now. There was a time… If you can’t roll it on the Jack wheel, get a good tongue dolly, you’ll easily move a 15 around. I just put large wheel barrow wheels with solid tires on mine, 14” + diameter, dolly rolls over 2” deco rock now. Take care, have fUn, go sailing! 50lbs of tongue weight might actually be dangerous towing it down the road as it's pretty light. You actually want tongue weight as it means thecenter of gravity of the trailer is in FRONT of the axle. You are supposed to have about 10% of the load as tongue weight. I had a trailer only hauling about 300 lbs of long timbers stuff a short distance with it nearly balanced (i.e. very little tongue weight). Nearly pulled the caroff the road and it was actually a small load. Basically it can start oscillating wildly side/side once it starts oscillating. It's the angularmomentum that gets you, not that the rear tires of the car are lifted off the ground. It's an interesting physics problem to see WHY. Basically its about center of mass of the boat/trailer. Put the center of mass ahead of the axle and the trailer tires helpstop oscillations. Move toward the axle and they help less and less. Go behind the axle and they actually make things worse. On Sunday, August 28, 2022, 3:57:56 PM PDT, <casioqv@usermail.com> wrote: I find the M15 easy to move around by hand, even up a slight hill... Hi Rusty, I see what you're saying, but I've towed my M15 all over the west coast, and never felt the slightest oscillation. I never actually weighed my M15, not sure what the real tongue weight is- but I don't plan to change it since it's worked great for me for nearly a decade. It's very possible that it is closer to 10%. A few unusual things about my setup - (1) my trailer has a really long tongue that is like a permanent tongue extension but also reduces the effective tongue weight through leverage despite the boat being far forward on the trailer; (2) I tow with a VW Touareg diesel that weighs over 6,000 lbs fully loaded, which is a heavy vehicle for towing a tiny M15 - and has a lot of the weight rearward compare to a pickup truck- my rear tires aren't going to be pushed around. I probably should mention that I am a big guy and a strongman strength athlete for context in saying the M15 is easy for me to move by hand. Regarding tongue weight, the YouTube video below nicely explains how tongue weight can affect the handling of your vehicle. I wanted to decrease the weight on my set up, as I felt that the load on the hitch was excessive (about 200#), which was towards to limit of what my 1 1/4" hitch was rated for. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9Dgxe584Ss -----Original Message----- From: casioqv@usermail.com <casioqv@usermail.com> Sent: Monday, August 29, 2022 9:38 AM To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Cc: Rusty Knorr <rustyinafrica@yahoo.com> Subject: M_Boats: Re: Boat moving Hi Rusty, I see what you're saying, but I've towed my M15 all over the west coast, and never felt the slightest oscillation. In the shop we used a trailer dolly, which is a trailer ball mounted on a small set of wheels, with a T-handle. Worked great, even on 23's. Harbor Freight has a lighter version for 64.95 that looks like it would be fine for a 15 or 17, maybe more. An aside, I used to sail with the group in Tucson, AZ, mostly in Mexico, and several of them had an axle stub welded to the tongue of the trailer, near the front, and had a wheel and set of bearings mounted. Most but not all of these were on fixed keel boats which needed to be cabled into deep water, and the tongue wheel would keep them going straight as an arrow. Most of the Mexican ramps were built to the standard of convenience and the tongue wheel was a great help. They needed a trailer dolly which was hi enough to lift the front tire off the ground, at home, for maneuvering, but not needed on the road normally. I have thought about setting my Sage up with a third wheel; maybe someday. ________________________________ From: Lawrence Winiarski via montgomery_boats <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Sunday, August 28, 2022 5:42 PM To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Cc: Rusty Knorr <rustyinafrica@yahoo.com>; Lawrence Winiarski <lawrence_winiarski@yahoo.com> Subject: M_Boats: Re: Boat moving 50lbs of tongue weight might actually be dangerous towing it down the road as it's pretty light. I have a Power Caster which I have used for my Potter 19 and Monty 17 to get the trailer up a hump in my driveway. They make several sizes for different weights I think I have the second one up from the bottom. At my new house I have lots of storage but no room to turn around hooked up to my truck. I have a Lance 1985 24ft travel trailer with a tongue weight somewhere between 550 and 900 lbs and my Power Caster is able to turn it around. Now I think this original post was for a Monty 15 which probably would not need something like this on a flat surface.

Thanks all,

Oh, and find me a nice M15 or Sage15 to buy!!! Please!!! 🙏🙏🙏😜

I've done it with my M-15; hard part is getting the wheels up over the "hump" of the garage floor. And remembering to raise/lower the tongue all the way so the mast (in its crutch) clears the roll-up door as needed. Rusty, I sail a M-15 and easily roll it by hand into its storage space on decomposed granite over dirt. The boat is on a Trail-Rite trailer with 12” wheels and a Fulton tongue Jack with a single plastic wheel. It should work well if you are on a paved surface. Good luck in your search! Rusty, I do it all the time with my M-15. Of course, I use a trailer dolly to pull the boat and trailer out of the garage and into position. As long as you’re moving on flat ground, and I do mean flat!! I would have someone help you the first time to make sure it’s a one person job and there is no incline/decline to deal with. Also, it will be easier if it’s asphalt and not grass/gravel. Skip Campion

Always use some chocks under the trailer tires to prevent unwanted rolling... and as a brake to stop the trailer from rolling. Connie On 8/28/2022 3:10 PM, William Campion via montgomery_boats wrote:

I am going to sell my M15. Haven't used it for a long time, so it needs to go to a good home. I'll get a few photos together - it is in Big Bear, CA. I am in Camarillo (Ventura County), about 160 miles away. The lake has no usable launch ramp, as the water is down from the drought. No slip was available this summer. I am willing to deliver it at no charge, anywhere in the US (I would like a reason to go to Maine 😁). If it is on a smooth, flat concrete surface, it might be able to be manhandled to be moved around. I did it, sort of, when it was on my concrete driveway, but it is now on a gravel surface, and I can't move it by hand. Oh, it has a 2hp Honda, newish set of sails, roller furling jib, in very good condition, seat cushions. Also an 8' Avon inflatable in a bag. Trailer is in very good condition. Extended tongue. Extra parts, teak tiller. I have no pictures on my computer. Ivory with dark green trim. It is very pretty. I paid $10,500 for everything about 2 years ago. It was used in the Ventura Harbor for a summer, then I moved it to Big Bear last year, thinking I would use it on the lake. I have a second house there. Prior to me buying it, it was used on Diamond Valley Reservoir in the Riverside area - freshwater/drinking water. I am looking, not too hard, for a 14-16' aluminum fishing boat to use on Big Bear Lake. I can get that launched. I built a dolly (photo) for my fishing boat, It worked very well for moving the boat into the garage. With the small footprint of the dolly, care was required to prevent the dolly from flipping when transitioning from the driveway to the garage floor, Jeff [image: image.png] On Sun, Aug 28, 2022 at 12:02 PM Rusty Knorr via montgomery_boats < montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> wrote:
