Hi. I am thinking about installing a jib furl on my Montgomery 17. I had a local rigger look at the boat this morning and he says the boat is too heavy for the "Harken Small Boat" and he is unsure which furl is best suited for this boat. He is going to do some research but I thought I would put it out to you all as well. The head sail is a genoa 150% Also, is it reasonable to expect the furl to be able to reef? A lot of us use a CDI FF2 on the M17. I have one on my boat and it works really well. Note my jib is a 110 not a 150. My jib if reefed moderately works fine. The pointing ability of the boat falls off noticeably as the reef gets deeper. Keith *Keith R. I think I had a CDI on my 17. Have since sold the boat and pics of her aren’t clear enough to identify. Sent from my iPhone

I've had a CDI FF2 on CornDog for about 15 years now, with a 150 genoa. It's worked great and I've never had a bit of trouble with it. On Fri, Jan 31, 2020 at 12:54 PM Bob via montgomery_boats < montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> wrote:

I also have the CDI FF2 on my M17. I added it a couple seasons ago. Along with getting a new jib designed to fit it and to reef well (keep good shape when reefed). The sail is equally as important as the furler, if you are going to want to reef it and have it work at all well. If you are just going to furl, not such a big deal, and you could use a furling-only furler which might be simpler/cheaper. In fact I have an excess Schaefer furling drum I could sell you... ;-) For a reefing furler, your existing jib would at the least need the "luff tape" (I think it's called) of the appropriate size for the slot in the furler extrusion put on the luff (in place of hanks/grommets/etc). If you want it to reef well, it needs luff padding added also so that good shape is maintained as you reef. And, it may be that your existing jib cannot be modified in either or both of the above ways. Or, it would cost enough that you might as well get a new one fully built for the furler. cheers, John On 1/31/20 12:40 PM, TIm Brown wrote:

This question comes up periodically and usually ends up being a choice between the CDI FF2 or the Schaefer Snap-Furl 500. The Schaefer is a more sophisticated unit and has the advantage of an upper swivel, which permits relatively easy adjustment of halyard/luff tension using the boat's existing halyard. It has the disadvantage of being more expensive and a little fussy to install. The CDI uses an integral halyard system which is both a blessing and a curse. It is a blessing because it makes for foolproof installation. It is a curse because it makes it a PITA to adjust halyard/luff tension. The bottom line is if you are someone who likes to fiddle with halyard/luff tension, get the Schaefer. If you're someone who thinks of halyard/luff tension as a "set it and forget it" kind of thing, get the CDI. My M17 came to me with a CDI FF1 unit (which, by the way, worked fine, making me wonder whether the FF2 is really necessary). Strictly as a matter of personal preference, I replaced it with the Schaefer. -----Original Message----- From: montgomery_boats <montgomery_boats-bounces@mailman.xmission.com> On Behalf Of TIm Brown Sent: Friday, January 31, 2020 3:40 PM To: montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com Subject: M_Boats: Furl for Montgomery 17 Hi. Interesting... If you look up the specs: https://www.sailcdi.com/flexible-furlers ...the FF1 says max 21 ft. forestay, a couple feet shy of an M17. So the extrusion would be too short, by a foot or more, unless you had the tack quite high off the bow. The extrusion is .1 inches smaller in both dimensions so using the longer FF2 extrusion in the FF1 molded drum unit would not work. The drum is 1/2" bigger diameter on the FF2 (4" vs 3.5"). cheers, John -- John Schinnerer - M.A., Whole Systems Design -------------------------------------------- - Eco-Living - Whole Systems Design Services People - Place - Learning - Integration john@eco-living.net - 510.982.1334 http://eco-living.net http://sociocracyconsulting.com
I installed a CDI ff2 on my M17 and had a new 135 Genoa made for it out of heavier than normal fabric. My reasoning was that I often sailed in strong winds and knew I would need to be able to furl it down to a working jib size and still be able to sail to windward. I was very pleased with the performance of the CDI while I had the 17. It did add some work and complexity to set up, tear down and trailering but I never had to go forward in bad conditions to deal with the head sail either. Always compromises to consider with every boat and equipment option. Mark Dvorscak On Fri, Jan 31, 2020, 12:40 TIm Brown <tim-brown@sbcglobal.net> wrote:

I went with the Snapfurl over the CDI because of the relative ease of changing out sails. I sold my 150 and 135 genoas and had a new 150 made, with a foam luff. I also had my 110 converted for RF, as well as a heavy weather sail I had from my other boat that makes a good storm sail for the M17. I did two things that make changing sails as easy or easier than changing hank-on sails: 1. I added a pre-feeder on a short lanyard to the tack fitting. 2. I took the jib halyard leading to the cockpit out of the deck organizer and installed a swivel block instead. That way I can lead the halyard tail forward to work at the furler and then back aft to the cockpit when finished. I do not change sails when under way, just at the dock before setting out. The problem with doing it under way, especially when single handed, is that the lowered sail is unrestrained by hanks and can be a handful to gather in. The 150 is my primary sail and is used in most conditions. If the weather looks like it is going to be too heavy for the reefed 150 I will swap it out for one of the smaller sails. I really like the roller furling/reefing. I didn't know what I was missing before I got it. As John mentioned in a previous post it gives me infinite and instant adjustment of sail size for changing conditions, up to a point. And with the Shaefer Snapfurl I can change to a smaller sail instead of trying to reef the 150 down to a 70 or less. Hi all: Harry at E/P Sailmakers made a new main sail and jib for my M15 recently and I love them. Harry was so helpful in explaining options to me. The improved performance was night and day.
