Our M17 #496 has the bronze rod/rudder. Was I mistaken to think a feature of this design was the ability to draw up in shallows? Would someone explain how this is supposed to work? Thanks. t Tom Smith & Jane VanWinkle M15/345--Chukar M17/496--Unnamed
You weren't mistaken, Tom, but I shouldn't even bother to post, b/c someone else will have to answer how it works ... However, I can attest that the stock rudder works very well indeed while raised ... My boat didn't have the rod configuration when I bought her, but I often put the old rudder's bottom two pintles in the top two gudgeons to sail in the shallows ... --Craig ----- Original Message ----- From: Tom Smith To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats Sent: Sunday, August 21, 2005 7:33 PM Subject: RE: M_Boats: Masthead? Man, I started to go out at 7pm Sunday night as soon as I left the dock, I was all "tis I am the great sailor" cause I was departing w/o using the motor. I started to unfurl the jib, when I looked up and saw the freaking mast coming down on me. ahhh I managed to catch it and break its fall, but also got bonked on the head. Looking around to see who was watching (pride hurts more than pain) I non-chalantly started the motor and limped back to the dock. After looking for the cause I, found the quick release pin, had ,guess what? Quick released. I have a line tied to the pin so it I wont lose it, and the line was secured to the deck not the forestay, so every time I furled and unfurled the line would get more and more twisted. I used a regular clevis pin with a cotter pin to resecure the forestay and still managed to get out and sail for 45 minutes. Thank goodness for light masts. Tom: The MSOG has some photos of my sculling oar, and in the background of a few shots is a picture of the rudder, in the up position. http://www.msog.org/how-to/oars.cfm Should a a 1/4" line, from the transom, down to and thru a hole in the rudder, and back up to a cleat on the transom. The rudder just slides vertically on the bronze or SS rod. The line is used to raise or lower it. And it is the rudder that slides. The pin stays fixed in one location. The newer ones may have been machined on the bottom...with a small end on the botttom. Howard On 8/21/05 6:33 PM, "Tom Smith" <tsmith@nextit.com> wrote:
