We may have the opportunity to bring our Montgomery 15 to Mission Bay in the next month or so for a day of sailing. We hope to poke around the bay and get out onto the ocean while we're there. Any ideas about good and bad boat ramps, bridge clearances, and anything else that might be handy to know would be appreciated! David Grah Montgomery 15 Bishop California
mission bay san diego? if so, there is no bridge clearance issues and most of the ramps are pretty nice....and free. i prefer the south shores ramp, it's a little far away from the sailing section of the bay, but the ramp is bigger and better IMHO. i don't sail in mission bay much, but sail bay is a nice reach from one end to the other. there are some places where you can anchor and eat too. another option might be south san diego bay. it is usually lightly populated, has really good wind and it has a really nice ramp. i can give you more info if your interested in either one. Hi, David I took my M15 to Mission Bay for the 1st time last June to introduce my daughter and 2 6yr old grandsons to sailing. Had a wonderful sail: perfect winds on a reach, comfortable air and water temp. EVERYBODY was out on the water: dinghy races and classes for the kids, sailboats, kayaks, paddle boards - and yet I felt there was plenty of room. I only had to shift course slightly a couple of times over the entire afternoon. I didn't venture out the channel to the open sea - not ready yet for that in my little Monty! I launched at Dana Landing, at the south end of Sail Bay, off Ingraham St to the right. It's a busy ramp, but with lots of room. There's a West Marine there, and a store with snacks, boat stuff and souvenirs, and a very handy waterproof Franko's Guide Map of Mission Bay. All the launch ramps are huge with corrugated concrete surfaces, and plenty of parking. However, when launching, someone has to be aboard to drive the boat to the dock: it does not lie beside the ramp. The South Shores ramp that Daniel mentioned is no where near as busy. By the way, bathrooms are at every ramp. The bridges are over 40 ' high, so no problem there. I'm sure you will love it and have a great time! No fees to launch. Enjoy!
