I purchased a 1977 M 17 last January and have had fun rehabing it. I fell in love with the monty back when they frist came on the market. The boat I have needed a new transom , so I cut the " cap " off and dug out the rotted plywood. made a template with cardboard then to luan and finally marine ply with excellent results. I replaced the aluminum drain in the underside of the stern and have all of the deck hardware off and am ready for the finish coat of paint when the weather cooperates. I hope to go to cedar key the first weekend in May if I finish in time. I have had fun so far and need to work on my standing rigging next.
Louis: the deck/transom joint can be a problem on the early M17s (meaning those with a transom cutout for the outboard). i'm making a guess ... at some point prior to your purchase did someone put a motor mount on the transom just below the outboard cutout? jerry can make you new shrouds, fore- & back-stays- www.jerrymontgomery.org good to read of another m-boat receiving some TLC. - Dave Scobie - M17 #375 - SWEET PEA :: www.m17-375.webs.com - Sage Marine :: www.sagemarine.us --- On Mon, 1/24/11, Louis Remmers <louremmers@yahoo.com> wrote: I purchased a 1977 M 17 last January and have had fun rehabing it. YES new holes were drilled and a motor mounting plate was installed. The transom did very well and i was pleased with the outcome. I am now trying to figure out how to make a kick up rudder. The origional had MANY knicks and gouges and I have always been a kick up kind of guy. Thanks for your note . lou: be careful trailering the boat with the motor on the bracket. i don't trailer my 17 with the motor on the transom because of stress concerns. the M17s sail better if you use the orignal transom cutout. COG is lower, forward, and more long the centerline. look at Rudder Craft / IdaSailor for a kick-up rudder - homepage: http://www.idasailor.com/catalog/default.php M15/17 specific page: http://www.idasailor.com/catalog/default.php?cPath=45 great company. excellent product support. they will be a the havasu pocket cruser event. - Dave Scobie - M17 #375 - SWEET PEA - www.m17-375.webs.com - Sage Marine - www.sagemarine.us --- On Tue, 1/25/11, Louis Remmers <louremmers@yahoo.com> wrote: YES new holes were drilled and a motor mounting plate was installed. Lou, I second Scobie's IdaSailor recommendation. I also think the cut-out would serve as a huge drain if the cockpit ever got swamped. Jim M-17 "Spirit" On Jan 25, 2011, at 11:52 AM, W David Scobie wrote:

Go with the IdaSailor system. My M-17 sits too low to the ground on the trailer to even launch the boat with the original rudder attached. Besides, it extends down in the water past the shoal draft keel - inviting damage in case of a hard grounding. The IdaSail rudder is really tough. I even whacked it with my outboard prop with no damage at all. Mark House M-17 "Seranita" On Tue, 25 Jan 2011 12:00:10 -0800 Jim Poulakis <picfo@comcast.net> wrote:
