greetings, for those of you following the exciting story of "hula pie"'s new thru hull here's the "as built" description: beginning at the cockpit drain which was scrapped, sanded and trimmed about .5 in. A "Gates" brand radiator hose #20450 is the perfect fit: 1.5 in. i.d.,with a quick bend to starboard then turning toward the 1.25 i.d. copper coupling [1.5 o.d.],3-4 inches 1.25 i.d. copper pipe followed by a1.25 X 45 degree elbow thru hull. the 45 degree elbow used as the actual part that goes thru the hull sits low and close to the hull allowing the drain to have fall all the way from the cockpit and can be glassed in with good strength. five layers of glass inside and out, a chopped glass fillet followed by several more layers over the top of the elbow made a good looking, strong patch. we have sailed her twice and not a drop of water! we just kept fooling with that centerboard, sticking a hacksaw blade up in the keel and tapping on the top and it finally came down! after diving and scrubbing with a wire brush it actually doesn't look too bad for a rusty piece of cast iron! that little winch really has to strain to get the board up. has anyone improved or reinforced this area? we want to sail the california delta this fall...any advice?...want to go? ron and cathryn goodspeed M17 "hula pie" #025
You should be able to stand in the bilge, facing aft, with one foot either side of the trunk, and lift the board by hand. If the pennant is old and worn, it may take 4 wraps on the winch just to keep it from slipping. ron and cathryn goodspeed wrote: that little winch really has to strain to get the board up.
"that little winch really has to strain to get the board up." Yeah, so does mine . . . Oh, you wrote WINCH, not wench . . . sorry . . . "that little winch really has to strain to get the board up. has anyone improved or reinforced this area?", I'm guessing you mean the winch mount itself: I have what I think is a related question. Has anyone improved/reinforced the hole through which the centerboard (line, rope, halyard?) rope passes? I was thinking of a brass or stainless "collet" inserted where the old plastic one failed (I imagine the plastic collet originally lasted about a week: It was sliding freely up and down the centerboard rope when I bought my boat). I have a "fiberglass guy" making various improvements/repairs on my 17' and he thinks it would be best to just heavily reinforce the hole. He doesn't think I'd gain much by inserting a metal collet.
