Hi, I am curious who designed the M-17. I had always been told that Lyle Hess was the designer of the Montgomery 17 Good old Boat magazine is now stating that Jerry Montgomery is claiming that he was the designer and not Lyle Hess. I have been told that the original drawings (blueprints) state that Lyle Hess is the designer of record on the M-17. Possibly both participated in the design of the Montgomery 17. Does anybody know who actually designed the Montgomery 17? Thanks very much. Kirk Hill
That¹s an easy one. The M17 was designed by Lyle Hess. See his comments on the MSOG site, which are taken from a M17 brochure: http://www.msog.org/models/m17/ogpg6.m17.cfm And the rest here: http://www.msog.org/yarns/lyle_hess_wb/wb-lylehess.cfm Jerry designed the M15. It¹s also a great little boat! Howard M17 #278 Audasea On 10/6/03 7:50 AM, "kirk" <hill26@always-online.com> wrote:

Kirk, The "Good Old Boat" statement is a mis-print. Lyle Hess designed the hulls for both the M17 and the M23 (and, I believe, the M8 dink). Jerry Montgomery designed the M15. Jerry also designed the DECKS for the M15, M17 and original M23 (I don't know who designed the deck for the new M23 Offshore Cutter -- A Jerry M./Bob Eeg consultation?). Lyle definitely designed the M17: I believe he might even say as much in an interview. --Craig, chonshell@ia4u.net ----- Original Message ----- From: kirk To: montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com Sent: Monday, October 06, 2003 8:50 AM Subject: M-17 Designer Hi, I am curious who designed the M-17. Hi KIrk I was told that Lyle designed the 17 (probably with input from Jerry). Lyles name is on the blueprints. I think Jerry built the 17 to these plans and later (Jerry) modified them to produce plans for the 15. Both boats are proof of a sensible understanding of what makes a great sail boat.
