I know this has been discussed endlessly in the past, but of course I never wrote it down. What is the best stuff for bedding a deck fitting to keep things dry? Thanks, David
Hi David, 3M 4200 is an excellent bedding compound for deck hardware. Cheers, Paul Baker On Sun, May 15, 2022, 7:22 AM David Hill <David@dfhill.com> wrote:

Butyl tape, for bedding anything above waterline. Here's a good how-to: https://marinehowto.com/bed-it-tape/ You can buy any good quality butyl tape, doesn't need to be the stuff this guy linked above sells. Much easier to work with, newbie/beginner/DIY friendly, easy to remove if needed. Everything bedded on my M17 is bedded with butyl tape. I've worked with 4200 on others' boats, ugh. cheers, John On 5/15/22 08:11, Paul Baker wrote:

David. My preference is Sikaflex 291. Next is 3M's 4200 or 4000. NEVER use 5200! There is one place silicone is allowed and IT IS NOT deck hardware. Make sure there is no wet core (balsa) before rebedding. If core js is wet repair required. Ask if you need more details. Another option even if core is dry is to overdrill the holes, fill will thickened epoxy and then redrill and then bed. Again,.ask questions if needed. :: Dave Scobie :: M6'8" #650 :: Baba 30 #233 DEJA VU :: SV SWALLOW - sv-swallow.com :: former owner M17 #375 SWEET PEA - m17-375.com :: former owner M15 #288 SCRED - m15namedscred.wordpress.com <<-- new site!
