Bob, How right you are. I was mistaken about the Pardeys using the Fatty Knees when they were on Seraffyn. They had Lyle design a small tender for them and it was made by Montgomery. It was 6'8" and weighed 62 lbs. They named it Cheeky, and they used it for 12 years while they owned Seraffyn. And during those years they had some rather interesting escapades. Once a bunch of Mexican kids jumped off a 12 foot wall into Cheeky and debonded the seats. Another time a trimaran caught its painter and pulled it into its propeller and put a football size hole in it. And yet another time it got rammed between two fishing boats and crushed it into an hour glass shape. But some fiberglass and resin fixed it. Larry Pardey said that if it had been a wooden dingy any one of these episodes would have totalled it. But, when they built Teleisen, they needed a little bit bigger tender and that's when they went with a Fatty Knees. As Paul Harvey would say, ..."and now you have the rest of the story..." And a happy Kwanza to you too ... pale face! Happy Sailing New Year. I did make the 6'8 dinghy that Lynn & larry usaed on Serrifyn, but it wqas when I was working for Richard Arthur, who owned the molds at that time (I later bought them from him), so techn ically it was an Arthur dinghy, not a Montgomery. Lyle did not design that boat; it was made before Richard ever met Lyle. I suspect that it was an L Frances Herreshof design, pirated by Arthur, as was the M-10. The plug for the 6'8 mold was made by larry pardee. Arthur was not a sailor but was a mechanical genius by my standards, watched Larry make the plug for the 6'8 and learned enough to make the plugs for the rest of the dinghies (that eventually became the M dinghies). jerry ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joe Murphy" <seagray@embarqmail.com> To: "For and about Montgomery Sailboats" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 23, 2008 3:47 PM Subject: Re: M_Boats: dinghy for sale

This is all just too funny when you think about it. First, I get corrected by the owner of Montgomery boats that the Fatty Knees was not L&L's first tender. And then the actual builder corrects me on the 6'8'r. I've always said it was a small world, but never realized how small the "sailor's" world was. I'm not going to be the least bit suprised if wedon't hear from the Pardeys by mid week!! Thanks so much Bob and Jerry for participating in this forum and for enlightening all of us....and keeping this reader on the staight and narrow. What a treat! I have a fatty knees 9 (Thumbelina) with sail equipment. It is a Lyle Hess design like the M17 and rows and sails very well. It is a bit large but tows very well behind Griselda (M17 fin keel #14). My grandkids love the boat and sail it from my dock when they are here to visit. I highly recommend a Fatty Knees to anyone who needs a hard dinghy that size. Ron M17 #14, Griselda & FK9, Thumbelina
