Re: M_Boats: Re: Portable, Multi-use head, Plastic bags overboard
I vote for NO PLASTIC to be entered into the chain. Note the recycling label at the transom of my boat. Plastic does not degrade anywhere near the schedule that we would like to think it does to make us feel 'guilt free'. Plastic and many other items kill bird and aquatic life. The bags as they are described are made of polymer and starch - the question here is -WHAT polymers and WHAT % of plastic - we believe the starch is biodegradable and benign, what is the impact of the polymer?? The chemicals used in a 'wet portable toilet'- formaldehyde, are most noxious and not good for much of anything - (my HS chemistry is failing me here on this one but I am not amused by the stuff) A biodegradable container for organic waste (human feces) sounds good to me, unless it is deposited in a sensitive area (low water movement or volume). I am not a biologist, chemist, microbiologist, but I am a cold water fisherman -- these (coldwater fisheries) are some of the most sensitive ecosystems, along with deserts. They are very near 'balanced' in an undisturbed state. Please remember make as small a footprint as you can - this will require some work on all our part to determine the least damaging action. Lets go, and find the least restrictive and earth friendly way to take a sh*t in the outdoors. Thanks, Gary O. Hi All: I concur - Dump NO plastic. Sailors should be among the first to act so as to establish a lighter footprint on land and sea. Unfortunately, we are at a species turning point brought about by our individual and collective activities. How we change these activity patterns in the next few years is very important to our future. Those who have not seen it may want to take a peek at Al Gore's Nobel Prize acceptance speech (http://thinkprogress.org/gore-nobel-speech ). cheers, Shawn Boles Grey Mist (M17 #276 1978) Member: Sustainability Commission City of Eugene -----Original Message----- From: montgomery_boats-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:montgomery_boats-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of GILASAILR@aol.com Sent: Monday, December 17, 2007 8:42 PM To: montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com Subject: Re: M_Boats: Re: Portable, Multi-use head, Plastic bags overboard I vote for NO PLASTIC to be entered into the chain.
